Meet sweet Daphne 💚🐾
Daphne recently came to see us after her family noticed a subcutaneous (SQ) mass on her abdomen. Dr. Teresa surgically removed the mass and, importantly, submitted it for histopathology.
But what exactly is histopathology, and why does it matter?
🔬 Histopathology is the microscopic examination of tissue by a veterinary pathologist. The tissue removed during surgery is carefully processed, stained, and examined under a microscope to determine what the mass is made of and whether the cells are benign, inflammatory, infectious, or potentially cancerous.
Even when a mass looks or feels harmless from the outside, we cannot always know its true nature just by appearance. Histopathology gives us a definitive diagnosis and can provide important information about whether the mass was completely removed, what type of cells are present, and whether additional treatment or monitoring may be recommended.
For our companion animals, this information can be incredibly valuable for prevention, early detection, and long-term health planning. Knowing exactly what we are dealing with allows your veterinary team to make informed recommendations about future monitoring, additional diagnostics, treatment, or simply giving you peace of mind. 💚
Daphne is such a sweet girl, and we’re so glad her family chose to have her mass evaluated. Sometimes a small lump can tell us something important about our pets’ health—so don’t ignore new or changing lumps and bumps! 🐶💗
Here’s to keeping Daphne happy, healthy, and loved for many years to come! 🐾✨
