Check out my discussion with TCOYD. We will soon have dual glucose continuous ketone monitors. What do you think? Do you want one? Will this help us prevent DKA? Especially….will it keep people out of the hospital or prevent death?

Why are people still not offering CGM? Let me explain 👇🏼

CGM is a diabetes device which continuously monitors glucose in the interstitial fluid. It can be applied quickly to the skin with the click of a button and connects easily to your cell phone. It uses a tiny filament beneath the skin to read the glucose level continuously.

The interstitial fluid is what the red blood cell floats in, so the glucose measurement is similar, just not the same as the bloodstream.

Continuous Glucose Monitors can be prescribed by anyone that can send in a prescription! So many people think they’re complicated, but they are user friendly and widely available in pharmacies.

Here’s the truth: CGM gives you more metrics than blood sugar or A1C alone. It gives you the glucose in real time plus arrows to predict where you’re headed. So you can make decisions more confidently.

Using CGM by itself doesn’t confirm a diabetes diagnosis. But using it will let you see trends, allowing you to act quicker.

The lab test “Hgba1C” and checking blood sugar still provides valuable. But Hgba1C, blood sugars, and CGM are all measuring different things, so I hope more people can use them together!

Here’s exactly what I do when people test positive for 2 type 1 diabetes autoantibodies:

* Explains to their patient that 2 out of 5 autoantibodies on blood work can confirm a diagnosis of autoimmune type 1 diabetes

* Determine what stage they’re in: (1,2,3 or 4). done by measuring fasting plasma glucose levels, cpeptide, and looking at Hgba1c trends. Why? This dictates what meds or treatment is needed next.

* Prescribe CGM. Continuous glucose monitors show elevations in case of progression to the next stage. This helps us prepare you in case you’ll need insulin. I’ve been using CGM diagnostically for years, with no plans of stopping.

* Discuss options. While Teplizumab can be infused in stage 2, we can enroll people in clinical trials or offer alternative therapies for early stage 3. Also, identifying people early helps keep them out of the hospital: there’s more time to learn about how to give insulin.
