Sometimes irritability is stress wearing a different outfit.

Stress does not always announce itself as “I feel overwhelmed.”

Sometimes it sounds more like:
“Why is everyone getting on my nerves?”
“I cannot deal with one more thing.”
“Just leave me alone.”
“I am fine.”

When the nervous system has been running on overload, patience can get shorter, small problems can feel bigger, and connection can become harder.

Irritability is not always the problem itself. Sometimes it is the signal that something underneath needs attention.

Not every argument is about what you are arguing about.

The dishes may not really be about the dishes.

The late text may not only be about the late text.

The disagreement about plans may be carrying something much bigger underneath it: feeling unimportant, unheard, unsupported, controlled, rejected, or disconnected.

When couples keep having different versions of the same argument, the content may change while the pattern stays the same.

Couples counseling can help identify that pattern and create a different way to respond to each other.
