🧠 Insulin resistance isn't just about diabetes. It may affect how your brain uses glucose for energy—and could play a role in cognitive decline.

Researchers are studying the relationship between insulin resistance and Alzheimer's disease, sometimes informally referred to as “Type 3 diabetes.”

Here's the encouraging news: Insulin resistance can often be identified and significantly improved through lifestyle changes, sometimes without medication.

In this episode of the Brain Revival Series, Dr. Patricia Ambrose explains why metabolic health matters for your brain—and why normal blood sugar doesn't always tell the whole story.

💬 Did you know insulin resistance can affect your brain even when your blood sugar appears normal? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Want to give your brain cells a little boost? 🧠

Your brain has a remarkable ability to learn, adapt, and form new neural connections throughout life. One of the important players in this process is a group of proteins called neurotrophic factors, including BDNF, that help support healthy neurons and neuroplasticity.

In this video, Dr. Patricia Ambrose explains how embracing new experiences, learning a language, traveling somewhere unfamiliar, or engaging in meaningful activities can help stimulate the brain and support lifelong cognitive health.

The key? Keep giving your brain new challenges and reasons to adapt!

Your brain is designed to keep learning. Give it something new to do!

What new experience or activity would you love to try? Share it in the comments!

Is Your Brain Getting Enough Oxygen?

Your brain is one of the body's most oxygen-demanding organs. When oxygen delivery is inadequate, brain cells can struggle to produce the energy they need to function.

Low oxygen levels can contribute to:
🔹 Oxidative stress
🔹 Inflammation
🔹 Mitochondrial dysfunction
🔹 Damage to brain cells and blood vessels

In this video, Dr. Patricia Ambrose explains why adequate oxygen delivery is essential for brain health—and why it's worth paying attention to the factors that affect it.

Healthy brain function depends on more than just keeping your mind active. Your brain needs the right physiological support, too!

💬 YOUR TURN: When you think about brain health, do you consider oxygen and circulation, or mostly memory and mental exercises? Tell us in the comments!

What if your brain had a NITRO boost button?

Just like a race car needs the right fuel and performance upgrades, your brain needs healthy blood flow to function at its best.

Meet nitric oxide (NO)—a molecule that helps blood vessels relax and widen, supporting circulation and oxygen delivery throughout the body, including the brain. 🧠

In this video, Dr. Patricia Ambrose explains simple ways to support its production, including nasal breathing and eating nitrate-rich vegetables like arugula and beets.

Small daily habits can help support healthy circulation—and that's good news for your brain!

💬 YOUR TURN: Have you tried adding beets or arugula to your diet? Tell us in the comments!

Is it really just aging—or could your hormones be playing a role? 🧠

Changes in memory are often brushed off as normal parts of getting older.

But hormones play an important role in brain health, too.

Estrogen, testosterone, thyroid hormones, and cortisol all influence processes involved in memory, energy, mood, and cognitive function.

As hormone levels and signaling change with age, the brain may feel the effects.

The good news? We don't always have to guess. When symptoms warrant it, appropriate evaluation and hormone testing can help identify potentially treatable problems.

Getting older doesn't mean every change should simply be dismissed as aging.

💬 Let's talk: Have you ever experienced brain fog or difficulty concentrating and wondered whether hormones might be involved?

Share your experience in the comments. We'd love to hear from you!

Could your brain have plenty of fuel available and still struggle?

Insulin resistance is more than a blood sugar problem. Research has identified changes in brain insulin signaling and glucose metabolism, including changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The encouraging part? Metabolic health is something we can influence. Nutrition matters, but so do movement, muscle, sleep, stress, and meal timing.

In this week’s Brain Revival, Dr. Patricia Ambrose explores the connection between insulin resistance, brain energy, and memory—and why metabolic health deserves more attention when we think about preserving cognition as we age.

Normal glucose. Normal HbA1c. But could insulin already be elevated?

In early insulin resistance, the body may produce more insulin to keep blood sugar within the normal range. That means fasting glucose and HbA1c may not always reveal the whole metabolic picture.

And the conversation goes beyond blood sugar. Metabolic health may also have important implications for how the brain uses energy.

Memory Changes and Brain Health: Aging Isn’t the Whole Story

Memory changes can be easy to dismiss as a normal part of aging, but age isn’t the whole story.

Brain health is influenced by many factors, including sleep, nutrition, metabolic health, inflammation, stress, physical activity, and environmental exposures. Many of these factors are identifiable and potentially modifiable.

The best time to support and protect your brain is long before significant cognitive decline occurs.

Memory Loss: The Same Symptom May Have Different Underlying Factors

Two people can have the same concern: “My memory isn’t what it used to be.” But that doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing is happening in each person.

Memory changes such as forgetting names, losing words, difficulty concentrating, or forgetting why you walked into a room may tell us that something has changed, but the symptom alone doesn’t necessarily tell us what is contributing to it.

A functional medicine approach looks beyond the symptom and asks a different question: What is this brain actually responding to?

Factors such as metabolic health, sleep and oxygenation, nutritional status, inflammation, oxidative stress, and environmental exposures may influence the brain in different ways.

The goal is to identify which factors may be relevant to you and which of them may be modifiable.

When memory or thinking begins to change, it’s natural to want something that helps with those symptoms. But addressing cognitive health may require looking beyond the symptoms.

Understanding what may be contributing to those changes can help guide a functional medicine approach to brain health.
