π¨ A Rare but Deadly Summer Risk Every Parent Should Know About π¨
As temperatures rise and families head to lakes, rivers, and water parks, it's important to be aware of a rare but devastating infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, often called the "brain-eating amoeba."
Naegleria fowleri can be found in warm freshwater and can enter the body through the nose while swimming, diving, or participating in water activities. Although infections are extremely rare, they are almost always fatal.
This topic is especially personal to me. Many years ago, I cared for a wonderful young patient, Kyle Lewis, who tragically lost his life to Primary Amebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM), the severe brain infection caused by Naegleria fowleri. His family's dedication to raising awareness continues through the Kyle Lewis Amoeba Awareness Foundation.
