If your mammogram report mentions dense breast tissue, you are not alone, and it is natural to wonder what it means.
Dense breast tissue is something seen on a mammogram. It is not something you can feel. According to research from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium, about 4 in 10 women who get mammograms have dense breast tissue. It is one of the most common findings in breast imaging.
Dense tissue can make breast cancer slightly harder to see on a mammogram, because both dense tissue and potential areas of concern appear white on the image. For some patients, this may lead a provider to discuss whether additional imaging makes sense based on their personal risk factors and health history.
Getting this information on your report does not mean something is wrong. It means you have more context to have a better conversation with your provider about the screening approach that is right for you.
