Self-Val YOU: Promoting Positive Personal Imagery

Self-Val YOU: Promoting Positive Personal Imagery I believe in the Power of Positive, and mentor young people on reversing negative thoughts and expressions about body and self image. It is a process.

A few years ago I was really struggling with my fitness and wanted to lose weight and was very down on myself, I would think negatively and sometimes say negative things about myself. One day I had a really bad day in P.E., I couldn't run the mile, and in the locker room afterward this girl I was friends with who was super fit and healthy was talking about how fat she was. I was embarrassed and ma

d because it felt weird to hear someone say that right in front of me and I was self-conscious about myself and I was mad at her for saying that when she was not fat at all. It was sort of like a light bulb went off for me because that was the day I decided I had to make changes and get healthy and so I talked to my mom and dad about it and started eating better and training. But the other thing that happened was that along the way I realized what I had been doing and what that other girl had been doing. It was negative self talk and we were doing it to try to get other people to make us feel better about ourselves by saying things like "no you aren't" instead of us having a positive self image on our own. I have done a lot of reading and learning about this since then. As many as 93% of young women use "fat talk" like what I heard that day. I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THAT JUNK IF I AM GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL. That is a lot of wasted time thinking stuff that gets me nowhere. So, I started changing how I think. If I catch myself being negative I do three things: first I figure out "Y" I feel like I do or are thinking or saying something negative. You have to figure out what is making you feel bad or you can't deal with it. Then I pick one option, I either take an "O"fframp and get my mind off of it and change the subject and stop myself and move on. Or I do a "U" turn and say what I was starting to say in a positive way. So instead of saying "ugh I'm never going to stick the landing on these turns" I make myself see the positive like, a year ago I couldn't even do these turns, look how far I've come! Get it, Self-ValYOU! You have to value yourself enough to put off positive energy. I still have good days and bad days like everyone else but I have gotten a LOT better about having a positive outlook. I feel better and it comes through in lots of things, my grades, my dancing, my relationships with my friends, everything!! Positive thinking gets positive results. I want to talk to people around my age about these tools so that they are set up for success as they go into being teenagers, when negative self talk can get really bad.

I am really really excited to share something very special with you today.

This past year has been very challenging for my family. I don't talk about it a lot publicly because I have felt like it was my mom's story to tell. We talked about it recently though because I really wanted to share what I have seen her go through. Last fall my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was not in her lymph nodes but it was a pretty big tumor and the kind of cancer it was is an aggressive kind that meant she had to have a lot of treatment and she is still in treatment. I asked her if she would be willing to talk to me here about it because I have watched her go through many many changes in her body and mind because of the cancer. We finally sat down and had a conversation about it. It is very different than some of my other IntervYOUs but I hope you will watch it because I am SO proud of her and because I think it's important to talk about all the different ways people experience a crisis in their self-image.

Please share with other women you know who may be going through this and comment and share here or on the video. And if you would like to talk or need support my mom and I would be happy to talk to you. Just email me at [email protected].

Wrapped up another season of Girls On The Run this past weekend in their remote Strong Girls, Strong St. Louis 5k! In the spring season I always volunteer at their big race downtown but like last year, because of Covid, the race was virtual. So I picked up my packet last week and ran my 5k in my neighborhood this past weekend! It was great to catch up with the GOTR team at the offices and I can’t wait to start finding a team to coach this fall in Springfield! Girls on the Run St. Louis

Finally after some technical difficulties! My newest Positive Pages video is about the book “Her Body Can” by Katie Crenshaw and Ady Meschke. I love how they make it clear that you should not let other people’s words or expectations determine how you feel about your body. You can see the discussion and read along at https://www.selfvalyou.org/her-body-can-by-ady-crenshaw. Please share with the kids in your life! And let me know if you would like me to read to your kids or group! I can do in person or Zoom!

The past few weeks have been very crazy and busy wrapping up a LOT of things including senior year classes and finals, my college decisions, and this really special experience—volunteering as a student assistant for Stages St. Louis’ inclusive Access The Arts musical theater class. After many months of spending my Saturdays working with these awesome kids and young adults, the class put on its performance of “Shrek: The Musical.” I am so proud of every single student and it was amazing to see the process of their learning how to be in a show and how self-confident and positive about themselves they became with each rehearsal! It was a privilege to work with them and appear with them on stage. It was also bittersweet for me because the very first show I did for Stages was Shrek, Jr.! I have learned so much by being a part of inclusive theater, including as far back as when I worked with Variety St. Louis in the Wizard Of Oz and Beauty And The Beast. Being a part of helping people gain new skills that give them more positive ways to identify and talk about themselves is priceless!

Happy Read Across America Day! It’s the perfect opportunity to share that coming soon to the website is another episode of Positive Pages! This month I will be reading “Her Body Can” by Katie Crenshaw and Ady Meschke. I think it is my favorite book in the Positive Pages series so far. The first time I read it I got choked up! If you watched the speech I gave to the The Kirsten Haglund Foundation Freedom Walk closing ceremonies you heard me talk about how dealing with weight and body changes really challenged a lot of the work I have done over the years on my body and self image. It is okay to have setbacks but it’s not okay to define yourself by a setback. Who you are doesn’t change just because you are being challenged. And changes are not necessarily setbacks! Where you are is where you are at that moment. It’s not forever if you don’t want it to be. Don’t let your brain lie to you about who you are and what you are worth. And don’t let it stop you from getting right back up and being positive about yourself! 📸cred:
