“Why don’t you let Dad feed the baby?”

Because helping with breastfeeding does not always mean Dad needs a bottle in his hand. Sometimes it means bringing Mom water, finding the snacks, changing the diaper, burping the baby, fixing the pillows, and apparently holding the baby to the b**b while she takes a mental vacation.

Support comes in many forms.

This one is called delegation. 😂

Look 👀 at this amazing graph which shows every recorded breastfeed for 14 months.

In the early days of breastfeeding it can feel like that’s all you’re doing, and it’s supported by the many dots (feeds) we see in the early months of this baby’s life, but look how the feeds spread out as the baby gets older.

You can see how the pattern changed again as the baby started to eat more solid food alongside breastfeeding, and then how shecontinued having a morning and evening breastfeed for many months after that too.

This is a fabulous visual to show what happens over the course of one breastfeeding journey. (Of course, not everyone’s will look like this)

*edited to say, please be kind! This is just ONE feeding journey of ONE dyad. Every feeding journey looks different, and each journey is beautiful in its own right. It can be normal for some babies to decrease the number of feeds as they get older, and it’s fine to follow their lead if all else is well. However other babies will continue frequent feeds day and night and this is fine too! If you’re ever in doubt, or would like some reassurance/support please reach out.*

Do you hate washing what feels like a million bottle parts every day? 🫠

Well… you might not need to anymore.

A new randomized trial published by JAMA just looked at whether those “anti-colic” / vented bottles actually help with gas in babies…

👉 And here’s what they found:

Across over 1,000 infants (0–90 days old)
there was NO meaningful difference in gas or GI discomfort between bottle types!

Yep.

All those vents, parts, and extra cleaning? They didn’t reduce gas overall.

Now, there were a couple of other findings - some babies in one group cried less during or after feeds, and older babies in one small subgroup seemed to do better.

But the study authors say we need to be careful with those results - older baby finding was not the main point of the study so the data is significantly less reliable as smaller/extra findings are more likely to happen by chance unless proven again in another study.

My take as an IBCLC:

Gas is usually not about the bottle itself (though we do recommend bottles that pass the triangle shape test).

Discomfort during and after feeding is more about:

👉 flow
👉 pacing
👉 positioning
👉 oral function

So if you’ve been overcomplicating things trying to fix gas… this is your reminder that simple can indeed work well.
