Family caregivers need support too. Respite care gives families temporary relief while helping their loved one continue receiving care, companionship, and daily support at home.

Caring for an aging loved one can be meaningful, but it can also become physically and emotionally demanding when you are carrying the responsibility without enough support.

Respite care gives family caregivers time to rest, attend appointments, manage personal responsibilities, or simply recharge while their loved one continues receiving attentive care at home.

Taking a break does not mean you are stepping away from your role. It helps make caregiving more sustainable so you can continue showing up with patience, energy, and compassion.

There are seasons in life when the people who once cared for us begin to need a little more care themselves.

Showing up doesn't always mean having every answer or doing everything on your own. Sometimes it means making the phone call, asking for help, sharing responsibilities with family, or simply being present through life's changes.

Caregiving isn't about perfection. It's about making thoughtful decisions that help your loved one feel safe, respected, and supported every step of the way.

No family should feel like they have to navigate this journey alone.

For many veterans and surviving spouses, accessing home care benefits can feel confusing, time-consuming, and overwhelming.

There is a moment many adult children do not expect.

It is the day you walk into your parent’s home and instinctively begin checking things.

Is there enough food in the refrigerator?

Did they take their medication?

Why is the mail piling up?

Have they been keeping up with their usual routine?

Do they seem quieter or more tired than usual?

These observations are not about taking control. They are about noticing changes over time and recognizing when your parent may benefit from a little extra support.

If you're in this season of life, here are a few reminders:

• Ask open-ended questions instead of only asking, "Are you okay?"

• Keep track of changes you notice over several visits. Small patterns can reveal important shifts.

• Include your parent in conversations and decisions whenever possible. Feeling heard can make accepting help easier.

• Share responsibilities with siblings or trusted family members. Caregiving is easier when it's a team effort.

• Remember to care for yourself, too. Supporting someone else starts with making sure you have the strength to continue showing up for them.

You don't have to navigate this journey alone.

The event may be over, but the connections continue.

Looking back at the Caregiver Relief & Resource Connection, we’re grateful for the opportunity to connect with families, caregivers, advocates, and organizations committed to supporting our community.

Sherly, Executive Liaison for Aiding With Care Health Services, represented our team and spent the day having meaningful conversations, sharing resources, and helping attendees learn more about the care options available to individuals and families.

For us, community events are about more than showing up for a day. They are about building relationships, staying connected, and making sure families know where they can turn when the need for support arises.

We’re grateful for every conversation and connection made, and we look forward to many more.
