You don't need to quiz your child! 💬

Instead of asking “What's that?” over and over, try commenting: "Truck" or “A BIG truck!” or “The truck goes vroom!” Language grows through meaningful interactions, not just answering questions.

Pediatric occupational therapy is so much more than reaching milestones! It’s celebrating the small wins, encouraging parents through the hard days, and witnessing the incredible things that happen when children are given the time, support, and space to grow at their own pace 🤍

Since opening Nurture, I have a whole new love for this career. It has reminded me just how meaningful this work is and what an honor it is to be invited into a family’s journey.

To every parent who has trusted me with a piece of their child’s story, thank you 🫶🏻 I am so grateful that THIS is what I get to call work 🌈

Sometimes, the biggest wins are the ones that might go unnoticed by others. The child who feels safe enough to try. The child who asks for help. The child who discovers a new way to participate. The child who takes a step toward something that once felt overwhelming. 💕

📚 Always learning, always growing! 🌱

Our OT and SLP team is taking the course Toileting 2.0 – A Neuro-Affirming, Interoception-Informed Approach to Building Readiness from the Inside Out! 🚽💛

You might be wondering… Why is an SLP taking a course about toileting? 🤔

While SLPs don’t directly provide potty-learning support in the same way our OT colleagues may, we believe in supporting the whole child and the whole family! 💚 Understanding how body awareness, communication, sensory processing, and individual readiness can impact a child’s everyday experiences helps us better support the families we serve.

At Smart Play Therapy, we believe that learning doesn’t stop with our degrees or certifications. We are continuously learning new information… and sometimes unlearning old, outdated information to better serve our families. 🌱

Our goal is always to grow, ask questions, challenge old perspectives, and make sure the information we share with families reflects a neurodiversity-affirming, child-centered approach.

October is AAC Awareness Month

“Not being able to speak is not the same as having nothing to say” - Rosemary Crossley

📱AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication.
🔘AAC can be aided, meaning using tools (tablet, keyboard, phones, buttons, writing, etc.)
👌🏻AAC can also be unaided, meaning no tools needed (sign language, gestures, facial expressions, etc.)
🗣️ AAC is not only for nonspeaking individuals.
🚫 There are no prerequisites needed to start using AAC.
🤙 Speech Language Pathologists help individuals determine the best fitting AAC system for them and their team (family, therapists, medical team, teachers, etc).
👋🏻 We, at Smart Play, are dedicated to continual learning, advocating, and assisting in the implementation of total communication.

The laundry can wait. The dishes can wait. The to-do list will still be there tomorrow.

But the little arms reaching for you, the sleepy snuggles, the extra bedtime hugs, and the moments when your child just wants to be close to you… those are the moments worth slowing down for. 🥹

Especially when parenting feels busy, overwhelming, or exhausting, give yourself permission to pause and soak it all in. You don't have to make every moment productive. Sometimes, just being together is more than enough.

Tonight, enjoy the snuggles a little longer. Take a deep breath. Let the rest wait. ✨
