3 Miscarriages !

TW: ⚠️ miscarriage, baby loss, spiritual work 🩷

Please note: I am in no way blaming this woman for her miscarriage experiences. Miscarriage is complex, deeply personal, and deserves to be met with compassion, care, and space to grieve.

However, within African Traditional Religions (ATRs), we also understand that there can be a spiritual layer to reproductive experiences.

Sometimes, through divination, we may uncover spiritual work, ancestral obligations, initiations, taboos, or callings that require attention. When that work is revealed and remains undone, we believe it can impact different areas of a person’s life.

This client experienced three miscarriages, and regardless of what was revealed spiritually, she still had to grieve each pregnancy and each loss. Spiritual understanding does not erase grief.

One way we can support a client through an experience like this is by helping her move beyond simply asking, “Why did this happen to me?” and creating space to ask, “What support do I need spiritually, emotionally, and physically as I move forward?”

That may look like grief support, ancestral work, divination, womb healing, baby release or burial ceremonies, spiritual cleansing, and appropriate medical care.

This is why I teach my Womb Practitioners to look at the whole woman. The womb does not exist separately from the mind, body, spirit, or lineage.

Our job is not to assign blame. Our job is to know how to hold the woman, honor the babies, support the grief, and understand when deeper work may be calling.

This is the difference between simply providing a service and knowing how to hold sacred womb work.

Across the Caribbean, our people have carried traditions around honoring, preparing, and burying the placenta after birth. Depending on the family, island, and spiritual lineage, the placenta may be cleansed, wrapped, prayed over, buried in the earth, or placed beneath a meaningful tree or plant.

In this case, my client shipped her placenta to me from Maryland and we froze it to prep for her BURIAL ceremony 🩷 we decided to blend it first (prep for encapsulations) so she can travel back to the DMV via airplane.

The placenta represents more than an organ.
It carried life.
It nourished the baby.
It held the connection between mother and child.
And for many of our ancestors, returning it to the earth was a sacred way of closing the birth journey and grounding the child into their family, land, and lineage.

This is why I teach my Womb Practitioners that birthwork does not end when the baby comes out.

There is still the mother to tend to.
There is still the womb to honor.
There are still rituals of closure, protection, cleansing, and restoration that our communities have practiced for generations.

Placenta Burials can mark the closing of pregnancy + honor everything the mother endured to bring life forward.
