Back to School, Back to Routine! 📚🍎

Teachers and students are getting ready to head back to school, which means long days, lots of sitting, carrying backpacks, and plenty of time looking down at books and screens.

A few simple ways to help your body feel its best:

🪑 Check your posture – Keep your feet supported and avoid slouching for long periods.
🎒 Lighten the load – Carry only what you need and use both backpack straps.
💻 Take movement breaks – Stand up, stretch, and move around throughout the day.
📱 Watch your screen position – Bring screens up closer to eye level when possible.
💧 Stay hydrated – Your muscles and joints need it, too!
🧘 Listen to your body – Don’t ignore aches, stiffness, or tension that keep coming back.

Whether you're heading back to the classroom as a teacher or student, taking care of your spine and posture can help you stay comfortable and focused throughout the school year!

📚 Here’s to a healthy, happy, and successful school year! 🍎

⭐️ BODY IMBALANCE: IT STARTS AT THE TOP ⭐️

Did you know your head weighs approximately 10–14 pounds? When your head shifts away from its ideal position over the center of your neck, the rest of your body may compensate to help keep you balanced.

This can create a chain reaction throughout the body:

🧠 Head shifts out of alignment
👇🏼
🦴 Spine and pelvis compensate
👇🏼
💪🏽 One shoulder may drop while the opposite hip shifts upward
👇🏼
🦵🏼The leg may compensate for the change
👇🏼
⚖️ Overall body imbalance

These changes can place additional stress and tension on muscles, joints, and other tissues, potentially contributing to discomfort in different areas of the body.

Your body works as a connected system—when one area changes, other areas may have to adapt.

🦴 FUN FACT FRIDAY! 🦴

Did you know there’s a bone in your body that doesn’t directly connect to any other bone? 🤯

✨ Meet the HYOID BONE! ✨

Located in the front of your neck, just below your jaw, the hyoid is a small, U-shaped bone that helps support your tongue and throat muscles.

🗣️ It plays an important role in:
• Swallowing
• Speaking
• Tongue movement
• Supporting muscles of the jaw and neck

✨ Tendon vs. Ligament ✨

Ever wondered what the difference is between a tendon and a ligament?

💥 Tendons connect muscles to bones. They help transfer the force from your muscles to your bones so you can move.

💥 Ligaments connect bone to bone. They help stabilize and support your joints during movement.

Think of it this way:

Tendon = Muscle 👉🏼 Bone
Ligament = Bone 👉🏼 Bone

Both can become irritated or injured from overuse, repetitive activity, or sudden trauma.

💥 Types of Spinal Disc Conditions 💥

Not all disc problems are the same! Here are some common types you may hear about:

⚡️ Degenerative Disc Disease – The disc gradually loses water content and elasticity, which can reduce its ability to cushion the spine.

⚡️ Bulging Disc – The disc protrudes outward, but the tough outer layer remains intact.

⚡️ Herniated Disc – The inner, gel-like material pushes through a tear or weakened area in the outer layer and may irritate or compress nearby nerves.

⚡️ Advanced Disc Degeneration – Significant wear can lead to decreased disc height, stiffness, and ongoing pain.

⚡️ Degenerative Disc Disease with Osteophytes – Disc degeneration can be accompanied by bone spurs (osteophytes), which may restrict movement or contribute to nerve compression.

Chiropractic care may help improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and support better spinal function.

Canning Season & Your Spine 🍅🥒

It’s canning season! While you’re busy chopping, lifting, stirring, and filling those jars, don’t forget about your back and joints. 🫙

✔️ Use a comfortable work surface to avoid bending for long periods
✔️ Take short breaks and stretch your back, shoulders, and neck
✔️ Lift heavy jars and boxes with your legs—not your back
✔️ Switch positions often instead of standing in one position for hours

A little prevention can go a long way toward keeping you moving comfortably through canning season! 💚

And we want to know… what’s your favorite thing to can? 🍅🥒🍎

From walking and bending to reaching and simply maintaining your posture, your muscles are constantly working behind the scenes.

🦴 Your muscles also work closely with your joints, spine, and nervous system to help keep you moving efficiently.
