The Acessa™ System For Treatment of Uterine Fibroids
Fibroids are a real pain, causing heavy periods, bloating, and more. If you suspect you have uterine fibroids or have already been diagnosed with them, the Acessa® procedure is a treatment option that lets you keep your uterus intact. The medical term for the Acessa procedure is laparoscopic radiofrequency ablation (Lap-RFA). Essentially, the doctor delivers heat directly into the fibroid causing it to shrink over time and, in turn, relieve your symptoms. Most patients are cleared to go home within 2 hours and are usually ready to return to work after 4 to 5 days. As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks to consider and discuss with your doctor when making your treatment decision.

Ever feel so bloated on your period that you look pregnant?

That level of bloating or pressure may not be "normal." Fibroids can cause symptoms like heavy bleeding, pelvic pressure, and a swollen-looking belly.

If your period symptoms are disrupting your life, don't ignore them.

How much blood is "normal" to lose during your period?

Most people lose about 2-3 tablespoons total. If you're soaking through pads or tampons, bleeding longer than 7 days, or passing large clots, it may be time to talk to a doctor.

After 12 years in women's health, Hughie wanted to feel what women with cramps and fibroids go through.

Last month, he ran the RUN F.A.R. 5K wearing a period simulator set to 10 out of 20 — in support of fibroid awareness. He could dial the pain down and take the simulator off. Millions of women can't.

Is heavy bleeding “normal” for you? Do you sleep on a towel or bleed through pads or tampons?

Even if your mom or other friends experience this too, heavy bleeding may be a sign of fibroids and shouldn’t be ignored. Women often try to explain away their symptoms, and this may be one of the reasons why fibroids can go undiagnosed and untreated for years.

We're still reflecting on The White Dress Project's 2026 Empowerment Experience.

Hologic was proud to be presenting sponsor supporting fibroid awareness, education and advocacy.

We were grateful to host Dialogue with the Doctors, and offer our congratulations to all Blossom Award winners, including Lupita Nyong'o, Representative Park Cannon and Senator Angela Alsobrooks.

Our Nurse Advocates spoke with more than 20 women onsite, bringing our mission into focus.

Not sure what to ask at your next doctor’s appointment? Or do questions come to mind after you leave? We’ve got your back.

Hologic Nurse Advocate Annie suggests these 3 questions for your doctor.

1. Could my symptoms be related to fibroids?
2. Would imaging like an ultrasound help us better understand what's going on?
3. What treatment options are appropriate for me?

If you still have questions after your visit, visit the link in our bio to schedule time with Annie or Jamie, our Hologic Nurse Advocates.

They'll help answer your questions, prepare you for your next appointment, and can connect you with doctors in your area who offer a range of fibroid treatment options.

You’ve got this, and our Hologic Nurse Advocates are here to help.
