⭐Meet our June Speech Stars Della & Justin⭐

🌟Della has been receiving speech services with Ms. Amanda since 2023.

Della was nonverbal up until age 3 and had limited functional communication skills. At the start of her speech therapy journey, Della was working on imitating single sounds and using nouns. Together, Della and Ms. Amanda have built a strong connection full of confidence and communication.

Now at age 8, Della answers questions about her at school day, greets friends and remembers their favorite colors, animals and Pokemon characters. She uses 4-5 word sentences, and independently approaches new people to ask questions.

🌟Justin began speech therapy with Miss Jamie at age 3, when he did not yet have a reliable means of functional communication. At that time, he had significant difficulty expressing his wants, needs, and ideas, and required substantial support to engage in early communication attempts. Now at age 8, Justin has made remarkable progress and confidently uses spoken language to communicate across a variety of contexts. He engages in back-and-forth conversations, expresses humor and personality, asks thoughtful questions, and independently uses language to connect with others in meaningful and creative ways.

🌟Justin and Della have formed the sweetest friendship at speech therapy, where they often have overlapping appointment times. What began with Justin’s excited, spontaneous run to wish Della a happy birthday has grown into a genuine peer connection filled with shared laughter and conversation. The two light up when they see each other and enjoy talking about birthdays, favorite colors, and their favorite characters (Eevee and Pikachu included). It’s been so special to watch both children practice their communication skills while building something so naturally joyful: a real friendship.

⭐Keep up the amazing work Della and Justin, you are stars!⭐

Overprompting

What we wish parents knew about “prompting too much.”

Sometimes support can accidentally turn into pressure when we over-question:

“What’s this?” “Say it.” “What color is it?”

Language grows best with balance.
Instead of constant questioning, try more modeling:

✨ “That’s a dog!”
✨ “I see a truck!”
✨ “That airplane is fast!”

Less pressure, more natural language exposure = more opportunities for a child to learn and join in.

Therapy myth: “If they are not talking, they are not learning language.”

Language is so much bigger than spoken words. Before children talk, they are often already learning to:

👉Understand routines and directions

🤜Recognize words and familiar people

👋Communicate through gestures, facial expressions, pointing, and play

✌️Build the foundational skills needed for future communication

A child does not need to be verbal to be communicating.

In speech therapy, we support ALL forms of communication while helping children grow their understanding and connection with others — because communication starts long before spoken words.

Hello June!

As we welcome a new month, we are looking ahead to summer approaching and all the opportunities it brings for growth in communication.

This is a great time to continue building speech and language skills through play, daily routines, and meaningful moments at home and in the community.

We’ll be focusing on keeping skills strong, supporting carryover, and celebrating every step of progress along the way.

Here’s to a great June and an exciting season ahead!

The weather forecast calls for lots of rain this weekend! 🌧️ ☔️

At Speak To Me Kids we know that rainy days = great opportunities for language play!

Try these simple activities to boost speech and language skills at home:

📕 Read a book – Ask who, what, and where questions

🎲 Play a board game – Practice turn-taking and using complete sentences

🍴 Cook together – Follow directions and sequence steps (first, next, last)

🖍️ Do a craft – Encourage requesting and describing (“I want the red crayon.”)

You don’t need fancy materials — just conversation and connection!
