Can an MRI sometimes tell us less than we think?
One of the most common questions I hear from patients is:
“My MRI shows a meniscus tear. Does that mean I need surgery?”
A recently published 10-year follow-up study adds to growing evidence that, for many people with age-related (degenerative) meniscus tears, arthroscopic surgery may not provide better long-term outcomes than conservative treatment.
That doesn’t mean surgery isn’t valuable. It absolutely has an important place for many injuries and conditions.
What this study reminds us is something we discuss with patients every day:
Treat the person—not just the MRI.
Pain is often influenced by much more than what appears on an image. Inflammation, muscle function, joint mechanics, movement patterns, and the nervous system can all contribute to how someone feels.
At CALM Healing, we believe every patient deserves to understand all of their evidence-informed treatment options before making an important healthcare decision.
