It is with a sense of brokenness and loss, yet with hope, we announce the home going of Elana Joy Nomeland.

Elana Joy Nomeland, age 76 of Minneota, MN went home to be with Christ on Wednesday June 3 2026 at North Central Heart Hospital, in Sioux Fall, S.D. due to sudden heart failure.

Elana was born in Sibley Iowa on December 1, 1949 the daughter of the late James and Frances VanDrunen.

Elana worked at several dental clinics before marriage. Her latest employment was with the Minneota Library where she worked for 25 plus years as assistant librarian. She loved meeting the patrons and getting to know them. She was loved by many of them. She retired in 2023.

Elana married Tom Nomeland on August 31 1974 and enjoyed nearly 52 years of love and life together. Another great event in her life was the arrival of her daughter and only child Rebekah on May 18th 1988.

Elana’s greatest pleasures were being with her husband Tom and her wonderful daughter Rebekah. Right along with this was following Jesus, attending Bethel Fellowship church and reading good Christian books, of which she read hundreds. In the last few years, she loved reading sermons by great men of the bible.
She often wrote on scraps of papers different passages and thoughts she gleaned from these books and her quiet time with the Lord.

She was a great friend to many and loved visiting with them. She always had an open home, welcoming in and accommodating many over the years.

She also loved taking care of her garden of flowers, Hosta’s and ferns, always working with them as she was able. She had a great eye for design.

Her passing has made a great void in her husband’s and daughter’s life as well as those who knew her well.

The service commemorating the life of Elana will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at Bethel Fellowship Church in Minneota. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 8, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a service of praise and commemoration at 7:00 p.m. at Bethel Fellowship Church. Visitation will continue on Tuesday from 9:30 am. – 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment will take place at the Wergeland Cemetery in Porter, MN.

She is preceded in death by her parents and one sister. She was survived by her husband, Tom, of Minneota, daughter Rebekah of Duluth, brother Paul (Diane) VanDrunen of Tyler.

The funeral service for Danny Hettling, 78, of Minneota, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 5, 2026, at Hope Lutheran Church in Minneota. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Minneota, with a prayer service and time to share memories beginning at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Friday from 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church. Interment will follow the service at Hope Lutheran Cemetery in Minneota. Military Honors provided by U.S. American Legion Post 199 and VFW Post 5334.

Danny Lee Hettling was born on January 22, 1948, in Marshall, MN, to Floyd and Agnes (Myhre) Hettling. He grew up on the family farm near Minneota and attended Minneota Public School. Danny was drafted into the U.S. Army, served from 1968 to 1970, was honorably discharged, and fulfilled an additional four years in the inactive reserves through 1974. On March 6, 1971, he was united in marriage to Shirley Gillund at First Lutheran Church in Marshall. After living in Marshall for a few years, the family made their home and raised their family in Minneota. Danny farmed until the late 1980s and then rented his land to a neighbor. He was always a farmer at heart and later enjoyed farm activities: driving in the rural area checking the crops, watching the farmers and discussing the weather. He also worked for Appleton Silo in Marshall and, later, for McLaughlin & Schultz and for Tolk Gravel for more than 30 years. He “finally” retired at age 73.

After his retirement, Danny found joy in the simple things in life. He cherished time spent on his farm, relaxing outside and enjoying nature, where he felt most at peace and truly at home. He loved rewatching old westerns, tuning in to his favorite game show, The Price is Right, and following high school tournament action on television. He also had a fondness for classic cars, especially his 1966 Chevy Caprice Classic, which he could never bring himself to part with. Above all, he treasured time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Danny passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at his home in Minneota, surrounded by family and under the care of Avera@Home Hospice, following a short battle with cancer. He is survived by his daughter Shantele Germundson (Tim Bahr) of Lynd, son Lee (Angie) Hettling of Minneota, Jessica (Grant) Poehler of North Mankato, grandchildren Brandon (Chelsie), Kelsey (Saun), Jameson (Samantha), Gabrielle, Gavyn, Danica, Jayde and Lexi; great-grandchildren Blakley and Hartlyn; siblings Carol (Keith) Seifert of Mankato, Royal (Karen) Hettling of Minneota, Judy (Jim) Maurer of Huxley, IA, nieces, nephews, relatives, friends, many cats and his beloved dog, Littlefoot. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, and brother Charles Hettling.

Grief is Love With Nowhere to Go

Grief isn’t something to ‘get over.’
It’s the echo of love that still lingers.

Some days it feels heavy, like a storm
Other days it’s a quiet whisper in the heart.

Healing doesn’t mean forgetting.
It means carrying their memory forward.

Be gentle with yourself.
Grief is love’s way of saying, “They mattered. They still do.”

You’re not alone in this journey.

Today we remember and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our country and preserve our freedom. We thank you for your dedication and service. Gone, but never forgotten. 🇺🇸

“Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause. Honor also to the citizen who cares for his brother in the field, and serves, as best he can, the same cause—honor to him, less only than to him, who braves, for the common good, the storms of heaven and the storms of battle.”
