APHASIA: The Words Are Lost. The Person Is Not.

One of the most painful changes families experience is watching a loved one struggle to find words.

A person with aphasia may know exactly what they want to say, yet the words do not come. They may pause, substitute the wrong word, lose their train of thought, or become frustrated when others cannot understand them.

It is important to remember that aphasia affects language, not love. It affects communication, not personhood.

The mother who comforted her children is still there.

The husband who told wonderful stories is still there.

The friend who made everyone laugh is still there.

When words become difficult, our role is not to rush in and finish every sentence. Our role is to slow down, listen carefully, allow extra time, and look beyond the words.

A gentle touch. A smile. A shared memory. A look of understanding.

These are languages the brain often remembers long after speech becomes difficult.

Connection is not measured by how many words are spoken. It is measured by how deeply we continue to see, hear, and value the person in front of us.

The words may be lost.

The person is not.
