Not every chapter of medicine is one we’re proud of.
For centuries, women experiencing menopause, anxiety, mood changes, insomnia, pain, and other “female complaints” were often treated with methods that today seem almost unimaginable.
Bloodletting.
Leeches.
Blistering.
Diagnoses like “hysteria.”
Even the removal of healthy ovaries.
Most physicians truly believed they were helping. They practiced according to the best understanding of their time.
Thankfully, medicine evolves.
Every generation questions old ideas, gathers better evidence, and improves the care that comes next.
That’s why history matters.
It reminds us to stay humble, keep learning, and never stop asking how we can do better for the women who trust us with their care.
Women’s health has come a long way.
And it deserves to keep moving forward.
Which one surprised you the most?
