Mr. Thomas William “Tootie Bill” Hampton, Jr., 82 passed away Friday, September 4, 2026, at Atrium Health – Union. Born August 18, 1944, in Union County, he was the son of the late Thomas William Hampton, Sr. and Bertha Caroline Walters Hampton. He was also preceded in death by brother, Gary Hampton
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Bill will be noon Monday, September 7, 2026, from the chapel of Morgan & Son Funeral Home with burial to follow in Marshville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11- 11:45 at the funeral home prior to the service.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 60 years, Paulette Stegall Hampton; son, Mark Hampton (Tina); daughter, Claudia Griffin (Brett); grandchildren, Emma Jean Hampton (Addison), Bexley Hampton, Jovi Griffin, Killy Griffin, Bode Griffin.

Dr. Tommy L. Butler, 75, passed away Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at First Health Hospital in Rockingham, NC. Born July 26, 1951, in Richmond County, he was the son of the late Silas and Cora Lilly Butler. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Gladys B. Butler and Tonda S. Sanford and by siblings, Richard and John Butler
Dr. Butler served many churches during his life most notable were 25 years at New Hope Baptist and Bethel Baptist for the last 6 years.
Funeral services will be 11AM Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at New Hope Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10-10:45 prior to the service on Tuesday.
Those left to cherish his memory include a son, Samuel Butler; stepdaughter, Robin Sanford Chavis (Chris); step grandchildren, Brayden Sanford (Lanie) and Baley Chavis; sister, Sandra Lilly; brother-in-law, Mike Bowman; sister-in-law, Darlene Bowman; mother-in-law, Maie Bowman; aunt, Gloria Butler; countless church members, all loved and considered family.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Clarice Elizabeth Anderson Thomas on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at Atrium Health – Union at the age of 87. She was the daughter of the late Charles Arthur Anderson and Ruth Mills Anderson. She was also preceded in death by husband, Kenneth Thomas, and a brother, Jerry Anderson.
Born April 1, 1939, in Columbia, SC, Clarice lived a devoted life to others. Family and friends will always remember her selfless acts of kindness and the love shown to them. She was a great seamstress from wedding dresses for family members to Santa suits for the children. The list of favorite foods, from her kitchen are endless. Clarice was employed by Alltel for 35 years.
Our family will forever cherish the love and countless memories she leaves behind. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in knowing her legacy lives on through the lives she touched and her strong faith in Jesus Christ.
The family will receive friends from 2 – 2:45 in the church sanctuary. A funeral service to celebrate the life of Clarice will be 3 PM, Sunday, August 23, 2026, at Mt. Moriah Baptist church with burial to follow in the church cemetery.

Happy Birthday Morgan and Son Funeral Home.

August 2026 makes us 63 years old. In 1963 the Morgan family wanted to give Marshville a locally owned funeral home that would serve the community with compassion and dignity.

This year and every year we celebrate that commitment and sacrifice made by the Morgan family.

Philip Tillman and his wife, Ann, still continue that commitment with every family we are blessed to serve.

James Robert Horne Jr. of Marshville, NC passed away on August 3, 2026, at the age of 90. He was born on April 30, 1936 to the late James Robert Horne Sr. and Virgie Bell Austin Horne and was raised in Anson County. Robert was also preceded in death by his sisters, Betty Lowery and Joan Brooks; and his eldest sons, James Robert Horne III and Ronald Robert Horne.

Robert graduated from Peachland High School, where he played basketball and drove a school bus. He later attended North Carolina State University and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Frances Sossoman Horne. If you knew Robert, chances are you have seen the treasured wallet photo he proudly carried of Frances. He never grew tired of pulling it out to show anyone willing to look, and he especially loved telling the story of how they first met at the Wagon Wheel in Marshville. It was a story he told with the same smile and pride, every time.
Robert also leaves behind his loving children: Deborah Horne Cox and husband, Bobby; Randall Roman Horne and wife, Iris; Donna Horne Cohl and husband, Gary; Dianne Horne Wykle and husband, Kevin; and daughter-in-law, Jackie Carpenter Horne, widow of his son, Ronald Robert Horne.

He was a proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren: Steven Cox (Emily), C.J. Cox (Stacy), Matt Horne (Kaila), Kristen Hendrick (Blair), Lauren Hoogland, Pete Hoogland (Victoria), Randall Horne Jr. (Rachel), Garrett Horne (Carlee), Travis Horne (Madelyn), Heather Johnson (Will), and Samantha, Savannah, and Ryan McDaniel.
He was also blessed with 13 great-grandchildren: Luke and Evie Horne; Heidi and Harrison Hendrick; Tucker, Thomas, and Tanner Horne; Vance, Clayte, and Parks Hoogland; Haydn and Chloe Cox; and Emma Johnson.
Robert took tremendous pride in both his family and his business accomplishments. He was a respected businessman and entrepreneur. In his early years, he owned a Ford dealership before founding Carolina Wood Products and later establishing Horne Enterprise.

He often spoke about how blessed he was, never taking for granted the life he had or the people with whom he shared it. His greatest happiness came from seeing his family together, especially enjoying time at his swimming pool and beach house. One of his favorite questions to ask as a visit came to an end was, "When are you coming back?" He loved to reminisce, tell stories, celebrate the people he loved, and share the blessings of his life with anyone who would listen. His pride in his family was evident in every conversation, and his legacy will live on through them.

A celebration of Robert's life will be held at First Baptist Church of Marshville on Saturday. August 8, 2026, at 4pm. Visitation will be held immediately prior beginning at 3pm. Burial to follow at Peachland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation or The Ronald McDonald House.

Mr. David Keith Griffin, 77, of Marshville, North Carolina, passed away on July 25, 2026. Born on September 17, 1948, in Union County, North Carolina, David was the son of the late Clayton Vernon Griffin and Ramona Efird Griffin. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jerry Griffin.

David proudly served his country in the United States Navy before building a life centered on faith, family, and hard work. He was the owner of David’s Nursery, where he dedicated many years serving his community with integrity and care.

David was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Betty Starnes Griffin. Together they built a loving family that includes their sons, Jason Griffin and his wife, Sandy, and Brian Griffin and his wife, Amber. He found great joy in being a grandfather to his cherished granddaughter, Ailey Griffin.

A faithful member of East Campus in Marshville, David’s life reflected the values of his Christian faith. In his later years, he enjoyed spending time working on puzzles and taking in the beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a place that brought him peace and happiness.

David will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his strong work ethic, his service to his country, and the quiet kindness he showed to those around him. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A memorial service celebrating David’s life will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at East Campus in Marshville, North Carolina. Visitation with the family will immediately follow the service. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tillery Compassionate Care of Albemarle, North Carolina, in appreciation for the compassionate care they provided.

Though he will be deeply missed, David’s family finds comfort in the many memories they shared and in the lasting legacy of faith, love, and service that he leaves behind.

Grief is strange… it doesn’t move in a straight line and it doesn’t listen to time. It feels like yesterday and forever all at once.
It reminds me that loss keeps its own calendar, unbothered by how the world keeps going even though we push through so many firsts and lasts. The strength of walking through these days now and having to learn to fill the immeasurable void our lives one left!
Grief doesn’t get easier—it just becomes a part of who you are and some days are harder than others!
We are grateful for every lesson, every laugh, and every ordinary day we had, just wish there had been more.

Mr. Jerry Blake Newsome, 79, of Peachland passed away Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Hospice House in Monroe. Born October 1, 1946, in Anson County, he was the son of the late Charlie Blake Newsome and Ruby Carpenter Newsome. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Jeremy Shane Newsome and siblings, Betty Meachum and Curtis Newsome.
Jerry was a devoted family member whose greatest joy came from spending time with loved ones. Whether gathering for holidays, sharing meals, or simply enjoying each other’s company, family was always at the center of his life. He loved to be outside, and the outdoors provided many of his favorite memories and moments of reflection. He was known for a strong work ethic and unwavering dedication, Jerry was a hard worker who approached every task with determination, integrity and pride.
A funeral service to celebrate the life of Jerry will be held 12 noon on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from the graveside of Deep Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11-11:45 in the church fellowship building.
Those left to cherish Jerry’s memory include sons, Jody Newsome, Andy Newsome (Monica), Lane Newsome, grandchildren, Caylee Newsome, Mackenzie Bunn (Tyler), Landon Newsome (Sydney), Laikyn Newsome, Blake Newsome; great grandchildren, Colton Hendrix, Hayes Bunn, Collins Bunn and Violet Newsome; sibling, Brenda Yarbrough.
