With temperatures soaring this week, it’s important to protect yourself and those around you. Heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially in children, older adults, outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone with chronic medical conditions.
Stay Safe with These Tips:
💧 Drink water consistently throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
🧂 If you’re sweating heavily, replace electrolytes as well.
👕 Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
🧢 Use hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen when outdoors.
🏠 Stay in air conditioning whenever possible or take breaks in shaded areas.
🚫 Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest hours (typically 11 AM–4 PM).
🚗 Never leave children, pets, or anyone else in a parked vehicle—even for a minute.
⚠️ Watch for Signs of Heat Exhaustion:
• Heavy sweating
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness or fainting
• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Cool, pale, clammy skin
• Muscle cramps
• Fast pulse
➡️ Move to a cool place, loosen clothing, sip cool water, and rest. If symptoms worsen or don’t improve within an hour, seek medical attention.
🚨 Heat Stroke is a Medical Emergency (Call 911 Immediately):
• Body temperature above 104°F
• Hot, red, dry skin (or sometimes profuse sweating)
• Confusion or altered mental status
• Slurred speech
• Seizures
• Loss of consciousness
• Rapid, strong pulse
While waiting for emergency services:
❄️ Move the person to a cooler area.
🧊 Apply cool water, ice packs (neck, armpits, groin), or cool towels.
🌬️ Fan them if possible.
🚫 Do not force fluids if they are confused or unconscious.
A little prevention goes a long way. Check on your family, neighbors, and elderly loved ones during this heat wave… they may need help staying cool.
Stay safe and stay hydrated! 💙
