July is Disability Pride Month! ♿

July 26 marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a landmark law that helps ensure equal access and civil rights for people with disabilities.

Access to sidewalks, curb ramps, public transportation, healthcare, and community spaces is a public health issue. Everyone deserves the opportunity to safely access the places they need to live, work, and thrive.

The colors of the Disability Pride flag represent the diversity of the disability community and the ongoing movement toward a more accessible and inclusive world.
Thank you Health by Design

⬛🟥🟨⬜🟦🟩 A sidewalk that ends at a curb isn't a sidewalk. July is , and July 26 marks the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, signed into law by President George H.W. Bush in 1990 to guarantee access and civil rights for people with disabilities.

Access is a public health issue. A missing curb ramp or a bus stop with no sidewalk connecting to it isn't a minor inconvenience. It decides whether someone can get to a doctor's appointment, a job, or a grocery store. Thirty-six years in, too many Hoosiers still can't count on that. From safe crossings to accessible transit, we're working toward communities where everyone can get where they need to go.

The Disability Pride flag was designed by Ann Magill, a writer with cerebral palsy. Here's what it means:
⬛ Charcoal background: mourning and rage for disabled people lost to ableist violence, neglect, and eugenics
🟥 Red: physical disabilities
🟨 Gold: neurodivergence, cognitive and intellectual disabilities
⬜ White: invisible and undiagnosed disabilities
🟦 Blue: psychiatric disabilities and mental illness
🟩 Green: sensory disabilities
The stripes cut diagonally on purpose. They represent moving through the walls and ceilings that keep disabled people boxed out.
