Peggy Jean Martin, 82, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away at her home Thursday, August 6, 2026. She was born in Virginia on February 18, 1944, to the late Eugene and Doris Joyce.

Peggy was a woman of Christian faith and a devoted member of Peoples Church of the Living God. A proud graduate of Bassett High School's Class of 1962, she built a life centered on faith, love, and family. She shared more than 50 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Dickie, creating a legacy together while raising their son, Doug.

Peggy found great joy and fulfillment in caring for her family. Whether keeping an immaculate home or preparing delicious meals, every act of service reflected the deep love she had for those closest to her heart. She also had a special appreciation for the beauty of nature, which was evident in the loving care she gave to the flowers surrounding her home. Above all, Peggy cherished the time she spent with Dickie. The two enjoyed fishing, taking leisurely car rides, and simply being together. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a faithful woman whose quiet acts of love and kindness left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband James “Dickie” Martin; daughter, Donna Lynn Belcher; son, Douglas Wayne Stump; grandchildren, Kimber Leigh Stump, Erica Stump Scearce; great-grandchildren, Jason Hunter Scearce; and numerous extended family and friends.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at County Line Church of Prophecy Cemetery, 2900 County Line Road, Patrick Springs, Virginia, with Pastor Dwayne Pruitt officiating.

Mary Everlene Tate Hines, 92, of Ridgeway, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. She was born on January 20, 1934, in Bedford, Virginia to the late Charlie Gordon Tate and Lottie Myrtle Greer Tate.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Allen Hines; son, Bobby Lynwood Hines; sisters, Jerlene Stewart and Bessie Tate; brothers, Charlie Tate, Howard Tate, Wayne Tate, Gordon Tate, David Calvin Tate; and brother-in-law, Robert Fears,

Mary attended Summersett Baptist Church. She retired after 33 years at Fieldcrest Cannon. She was known as a hardworking, dependable woman whose greatest joy came from caring for those she loved. She especially enjoyed preparing meals for her family, and her kitchen was a place where love was generously served alongside every dish.

She was a Godly woman that lived a life marked by kindness, strength, and unwavering devotion to her family. Her home was always filled with warmth, laughter, and love. She found her greatest joy in caring for those around her. She was a constant source of wisdom, encouragement, and comfort; leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a family that will miss her deeply and honor the legacy of love and compassion she shared throughout her life.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Hines Griffin (Roger); her sons, Carl Allen Hines (Sherry), Glen Matthew Hines (Marilyn), and Barry Clinton Hines (Amy Dalton); her sisters, Bernice Fears and Gail Tate; her brother, Jesse Tate (Diane); seven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and many friends.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, August 10, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway, Virginia. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Vickie Lynn Bowers Martin, 62, of Collinsville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital in Roanoke, Virginia. She was born on February 13, 1964, in Martinsville, Virginia, the late Edward Eugene Bowers and Gloria Dale Willis Bowers, who survives.

Vickie dedicated her life to caring for those she loved. As a homemaker, she found her greatest joy in creating a warm and welcoming home for her family. She especially enjoyed tending to her vegetable and flower gardens, watching her favorite soap operas, spending time at the beach, and caring for her children.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her daughter, Haley Martin (Jacob Gwynn); her son, Robert Bailey (Jessica); her sister, Sherry Custer (Mark); and her grandchildren, Jayce Bailey, Jordyn Bailey, and Jackson Gwynn; other family members and friends.

Although services are private, the family wishes to express their profound gratitude for all of the love, prayers, and many good deeds sent their way during this time of grief.

Danny Lee Caldwell, 69, of Martinsville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, August 3, 2026. He was born on April 27, 1957, in Thierville, France, to the late Billy Lee Caldwell and Armande Marie Juliette Galnon Caldwell.

In addition to his parents, Danny was preceded in death by his brother, Patrick Caldwell.

For 48 years, Danny shared his life with his wife, Kimberly Caldwell. Like many marriages that span a lifetime, theirs was shaped by both challenges and triumphs. Through love, preserveance and forgiveness, they built a family rooted in undying love. Their journey together stood as a testament to the strength that comes from choosing each other, time and again.

Danny was an exceptional brick and block mason whose work stands as a lasting testament to his skill, precision, and pride in craftsmanship. Masonry was far more than a profession—it was his calling. Every wall, fireplace, and structure he built reflected the care he put into his work and his belief that anything worth doing was worth doing well. He took immense pride in leaving behind work that would endure for generations.

A self-taught mechanic with an extraordinary ability to understand how things worked, Danny could diagnose and repair nearly any engine placed before him. He approached every project with determination and an unwavering desire to learn. His interests extended to mechanical drawing, architecture, and construction; he admired the craftsmanship and thoughtful design behind well-built structures. Danny also enjoyed target shooting, studying the weather, space, history and geography. His curiosity never faded, and he found joy in understanding the world around him.

As impressive as his talents were, they were surpassed only by the kind of man he was. Danny had a rare gift for friendship. He showed up for people in ways that many never experience—offering his time, his knowledge, his strength, and his heart without expecting anything in return. If someone needed help, he was there. If a friend was struggling, he stepped in. His generosity was genuine, his loyalty unwavering and reached far beyond what he ever sought recognition for. Those fortunate enough to know him knew they could always count on Danny.

Above all else, he cherished his family. Nothing brought him greater pride than the people he loved and the values of hard work that he demonstrated every day.

He is survived by his wife, Kimberly Caldwell; his daughter, Crystal Caldwell (Mark Hardison); his sister, Terri Styles; his brother, Mike Caldwell; his grandsons, Tre Wooten (Peyton) and Nic Wooten (Kim Boone); his great-granddaughter, Gwyneth Wooten; his special friends who became family, the McCrickards and the Comptons; and a host of extended family members, lifelong friends too numerous to list, and all who were blessed to know him. His faithful canine companion, Cooper, was never far from his side and brought him countless years of happiness.

Though Danny’s hands have been laid to rest, the legacy they built remains all around us—in the structures he helped create, in the engines he brought back to life, and most importantly, in the countless lives he touched through his generosity and steadfast friendship. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered and forever loved by us all.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, August 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Fair Haven Memorial Park, with Eulogy by Mark Hardison.

Tina Theresa King, age 57, of Martinsville, Virginia, peacefully departed this life on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at her residence. She was born on November 28, 1968, in Washington, D.C., Tina was the cherished daughter of the late Michael Steven King and Denise Darcell Williams Thomas.

In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Georgianna Clark, Ernestine King, and Trina Mae Ross; one aunt, Jenny L. Scales; three uncles, Andre King, Stanley Williams, and Michael B. Williams; and one brother, Michael A. Williams.

Tina was a member of Shiloh Way of the Cross Church. She graduated from Patrick & Henry Community College. Tina found great joy in life's simple pleasures. She loved listening to music, spending time with her family and friends, and caring for children. Her nurturing spirit, warm smile, and compassionate heart touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed.

In addition to her mother she is survived by her three daughters, Tamara (Akeem) Green of New York, Tiffany Fuller of Martinsville, Virginia, and Zairea P. Hairston, of the home; two grandchildren, Kalel Fuller and Chase M. Green; six sisters: Kamica A. Taylor of Martinsville, Virginia; Darla Enriquez of New York; Felicia Dawn Hairston and Pam Turner, both of Martinsville, Virginia; Lenore (Jeff) Hairston of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Sherrika Martin of Martinsville, Virginia; step brothers, Reggie Thomas, both of Charlotte, North Carolina; John Oulds of Martinsville, Virginia; Corey Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Darnell (Denise) Cabiness of Greensboro, North Carolina. She was also blessed with three great-nieces, seven nephews, four great-nephews; her aunts, Mother Denise (Reginald) Thomas of Charlotte, North Carolina, Roberta Mumford of Miami, Florida, Georgia A. Williams, and Wanda (Darryl) Douglas of Washington, D.C.; her uncle, Lenard King, Sr. of Washington, D.C.; along with other family members and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church, at 12:30 PM. The interment will follow at Fair Haven Memorial Park. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service. A floating visitation will take place on Friday, August 14, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Wright Funeral Service Martinsville Chapel.

Charlotte Marie Pace, 69, of Martinsville, VA, passed away Monday, August 3, 2026. She was born on June 11, 1957, in Franklin County, Va, to the late Thomas Pace and Evelyn Marie Robertson Hagwood.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Tasha Nicole Pace; her brothers, Thomas J. Roberson and James E. Hagwood; her sister, Gloria J. Patterson; her niece, Shameka N. Pace; and her uncle, Billy Robertson.

She was a member of a Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. She found joy in listening to Motown music, shopping, and collecting beautiful pocketbooks. Most of all, she cherished spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sisters, Martha Manns of Henry, VA and Wanda (Donnie) Grey; special nieces, Tonya (John) Craighead of Martinsville, VA and Shalisa Hagoowd of Rocky Mount, VA; her uncles, Leonard (Anita) Robinson of Martinsville, VA, and Samuel Robinson of Henry, VA; her aunt, Donna Robertson; her special aunt, Mary Mattox of Fayetteville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Geneva Ellen Simpkins Hess, 80, of Martinsville, Virginia, entered her eternal rest Tuesday, August 4, 2026. She was born June 24, 1946, in Sandlick, West Virginia, to the late Arnold Henry Simpkins and Verdie Ada Ellis Simpkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Edward Hess; son, Mark Allan Hess; sisters, Belle Jane Simpkins White, Patricia Simpkins; brothers, Kenneth “Kenny” Simpkins, Dempsey Simpkins, Buddy Simpkins, Larry Simpkins, Troy Simpkins; and one granddaughter.

Geneva was a woman of Christian faith and a member of Mercy Crossing Church. She found joy in life's simple pleasures, including watching television, taking trips to the beach, and, above all, spending cherished time with her family.

Those left to honor her memory are her daughters, Sandra Kaye Hess Prillaman (Barry), Margaret Ann Hess; brother, Albert Henry Simpkins; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
