Good Morning From The Farn.

Can you believe it’s August already? Back to School stuff is out, and now we have to start thinking ahead and prepping for Winter.

So far this week we have not had that Raccoon attack.

It seems our double electric fence setup along with the poly-electric wire around trees is working.

We opened the transition pens last night so everyone could come out and join the others in the main aviary area. They are still able to go back into the transition area, which we still secure at night.

2 out of 3 of the Muscovy Ducklings have gotten a bit too big to fit through the fence gaps now, and are staying in the main aviary area. The third we believe is a girl, and is almost too big but has found a spot to squeeze out so she can go to the Goat Buck area and forage.

We don’t know what happened to Mrs. BB’s little chick, who just disappeared a few days ago.

Mrs. Black’s 7 Chicks (That were originally Boo Boo’s but that raccoon got her just as the eggs were hatching, so we gave them to Mrs. Black) are doing great.

One accidentally got into the larger water tote and we were lucky to notice that. Little one was wet and a bit cold, but once we gave it back to Mrs. Black, she and the other chick gathered around and began warming it up.

Crackers, the reddish-brown Muscovy we recently adopted from Henry County Animal Shelter is doing great as well. Took about a week to get used to the other ducks in the aviary area but now is just one of the guys.

Today is Hay and Grain Delivery Day. Thankfully that our new supplier delivers to us. My back has been pretty bad with a lot of pain bouncing side to side, and making it difficult to even walk on some days.

I do need to make some room in the Grain Trailer and get the hay barn a little bit more organized.

Hope everyone has a great and safe weekend.

Our broody hen with her new 7 adopted hatchlings.

We did have 8, but unfortunately one passed shortly after hatching.

Their mother was killed protecting her nest from a Raccoon that has been killing our flock over the past few months.

We finally stopped it from getting into our main aviary area with addition of a double electric fence and high capacity charger, but now it is targeting the few chickens we have outside that area and in our Goat area.

We are expanding the electric fencing to encompass the entire area, but only have enough for one fence line. Hopefully in a few months we can obtain more to double the perimeter protection.
