John Nichols’ life changed in an instant after a motorcycle crash left him with severe injuries, including a spinal cord injury that caused paralysis from his ribs down. In the early days, even the smallest progress felt monumental — like the first time he could wiggle a toe.

After months of rehabilitation, John found his way to MercyOne, where he began working with a team that helped him push beyond what he thought was possible.

Four years after his accident, he crossed the finish line of his first Grand Blue Mile with his MercyOne physical therapist by his side. Today, more than seven years into recovery, he’s still getting “1% better every day,” improving his race time and taking steps on his own.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the team at MercyOne,” John says. “They’re helping me rebuild my life.”

Our MercyOne Children’s Hospital William and Josephine Norkaitis NICU team really knows how to make everything special — including celebrating new dad Tyler’s birthday.

To mark Tyler’s birthday, the girls' NICU team created the sweetest card “from” Camille and Corinne. A special shoutout to nurse Connie for crafting such a beautiful keepsake. 🎨

The Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Iowa has also been a tremendous blessing to this family, surprising Tyler with a birthday card and a delicious chocolate cake. 🎂

We’re so grateful for the compassionate care, steady support and thoughtful moments of joy our teams bring to families every day.

Tyler and Tessa welcomed twins Camille and Corinne at just 27 weeks after Tessa was transported by helicopter from MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center to MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center by the MercyOne Maternal Transport team.

When you meet Bryce, now age 6, he’ll likely ask you which car brand you drive or what toothpaste you use.

What you might not realize is just how far he’s come.

Born at 26 weeks with cerebral palsy and hydrocephalus, Bryce once couldn’t walk or speak. Today, thanks to the team at MercyOne, he’s a “chatterbox,” as his mother says, going from non-speaking to full conversations in just 11 months.

After surgery and intensive physical and occupational therapy, Bryce recently took his first independent steps — a moment his family calls extraordinary.

From learning to communicate to walking, writing and gaining independence, Bryce’s journey is filled with big milestones made possible by hard work, dedicated therapists and a whole lot of heart. “His growth has been just amazing,” his mom shared.
