Just when you find yourself in a situation where the schoolwork is done and the last grade has been given, that's when you’re required to do one last project. That’s the situation you find yourself in when you’re the “bookish older son,” and it’s the sad duty to write an obituary for your dear and loved mother.

But how do you talk about the totality of a person’s life in a short, concise manner? How do you distill the essence of such a delightfully eccentric life? How do you find that kernel of truth about a woman’s life, one filled with hot wings and grandkids and pickles and tidy garden beds? Where are the easy words to describe a lifetime of fishing and digging in the dirt; producing nutrients as often as grandchildren like Samuel Thompson-Yezek, Joseph Yezek, and Matthew Yezek, and before that, sons, Peter and Michael? Where is the easy place to discuss a marriage of over 5 decades to Dean Yezek? Where do you tell the raucous stories of Girl Scout adventures? Dale August Matte, 52, of Charles City, IA, and Rockport, TX, passed away on August 28, 2026. Arrangements are with Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home.

Dale enjoyed living a simple life. He liked doing things like playing with his cat, Tommy; going for walks; riding his bicycle; playing video games for hours; collecting knives; riding around on gravel roads with his brother, Ron; hanging out with friends; watching football in the winter; and eating good food. Dale loved food (especially sweets), talking about food, and cooking at times. He really enjoyed it when he and Ron would get out the smoker to cook some meat, especially if it were venison.

Dale’s parents, Ronald Matte Sr. and Dianne (Roberts/Matte) Garrett, preceded him in death.

Dale is survived by his brother Ron Matte & his wife Sherri & daughter Cassy Rye; his sister Kelley Huffman & her children – Ashley Cavan, Brandi Huffman, Ethan Huffman & their families; his brother-in-law Dan Huffman; and his brother Hal Matte & his wife Devon & family.

Dale will be missed deeply by his family and friends. ‘The memory of the righteous is a blessing’ (Proverbs 10:7), and his memory will live on in all who knew him. He will never be forgotten.
