Bats are fantastic for Iowa because they eat up to their full body weight in mosquitoes and agricultural pests every night. Even though they do great work for our ecosystem, bats are wild animals and definitely not household pets. Any wild bat can carry rabies, and they do best when left completely alone in nature. When riding electric devices on public streets, young operators must follow the exact same traffic laws as motor vehicles and traditional cyclists. Most lead poisoning does not come from kids eating paint chips. It comes from fine, invisible paint dust created every time an older window or door opens and closes.

If your home was built before 1978, that dust can put toddlers and young kids at risk for long-term health and developmental issues. Iowa law and health guidelines recommend blood lead testing for all children at age 1 and age 2, or anytime before age 6 if they spend time in older housing. Talk to your clinic or pediatrician about scheduling a simple screening.
To fix the root cause, CG Public Health still has grant funding available to remove lead hazards from older residences at no cost to qualified households. We only have two homeowner spots left before our current HUD grant closes this December.

Eligibility requirements:
1. Home must be in Cerro Gordo County.
2. Built before 1978.
3. Must house a pregnant woman or a child under age 6, or have a child under 6 visit at least 6 hours each week.
4. Household income must meet program guidelines.
