I was truly blessed to have been taken under Dr. Durlan Castro’s wing. He didn’t just teach me Active Release Technique —he shaped me into the doctor I am today. He molded my hands as if they were his own healing hands, and every patient I help carries a piece of what he taught me. So much of my success exists because this man believed in me long before I fully believed in myself.

His knowledge was endless, but it was his kindness, patience, humbleness and heart that made him extraordinary. In a world where people are often too busy for others, he always made time to guide, teach, encourage, and help. He was more than a mentor to me—he was family.

I will miss calling him for advice, whether it was about business, a difficult patient case, or even my own injuries. Somehow he always had the answers. Even after we stopped working together in 2008 during a rough period in my life, he never stopped rooting for me.

When I got back on my feet and opened my office on Broadway in Massapequa, he called me and said, “Trish, people are still asking for you. It’s only right that I give you your old listings back.” That kind of selflessness is rare. He could have kept those patients for himself, but instead he chose to help build me back up. That moment changed my life, and I will never forget it.

I spoke to him this past weekend. Once again, he was advising me and looking out for me the way a father would look out for his child. Before getting off the phone he said, “I’m busy right now, but let’s talk soon. I can help.”

Two days later, I got the call that he had passed away.

My heart is shattered.

There are certain people who come into your life and permanently change the course of it. They lift you when you’re down, remind you of your worth when you forget it, and help you become the best version of yourself. Dr. Castro was that person for me.

I will forever carry his teachings, his belief in me, and his voice in the back of my mind every time I treat a patient. A part of him will live on through every life I help because of everything he taught me.

Thank you for everything, D! I hope you knew how deeply appreciated and loved you were. You made a difference in this world, and especially in mine. You will always be my mentor, and you will never be forgotten.
