Not all high-cost DME shows up where you'd expect it.

A new WCRI FlashReport found average daily rates of $1,862 for intermittent limb compression devices (E0676) and $2,620 for infrared heating pad systems (E0221) — both billed with no fee schedule to keep rates in check.

And the exposure is growing: the uncovered DME payment share in the median state climbed from 58% to 63% between 2019 and 2025, with some states moving even faster like Rhode Island saw a 29-point jump.

For claims teams and NCMs, it's a reminder that the equipment getting the least scrutiny is often costing the most.

Is your DME review process built to catch codes like these?

Next week, we'll be at the Georgia Workers' Compensation State Conference, August 31 through September 2.

If you're headed to Georgia, we'd love to connect and talk through how Comp-X supports claims teams with coordinated ancillary healthcare services.

A new WCRI Report confirms what claims teams have long suspected: non‑price‑controlled DME services made up 62% of total DME payments in 2025, driven largely by codes like the E1399 miscellaneous catch‑all, where there's no fee schedule to keep rates in check.

Left unmonitored, rental payments can quietly exceed the cost of buying the equipment outright. The injured worker gets the same wheelchair or CPM machine, but the file absorbs months of extra cost a timely purchase would have avoided.

At Comp‑X, rental‑to‑ownership conversion is monitored daily and built into how we manage every DME order, so cost overrun isn't something an adjuster has to catch after the fact.

How much of your DME spend is sitting in open‑ended rentals right now?
