FEATURED CLIENT STORY - VOTE YES ON AUGUST 4
Joe’s wife Audrey was diagnosed with metastatic cancer. He is few years younger than Audrey and was still working full-time to get insurance coverage and max out his Social Security benefits in a few years. Quitting work isn’t a good option right now especially in light of the co-pays for medical needs but he is able to cut back his hours temporarily to be able to take Audrey for her chemo treatments and frequent doctor visits. He was surprised to learn that Allegan County where they live has excellent senior benefits for home-bound seniors like Audrey. He was able to arrange for a couple personal home care visits each week as well as meals and a personal emergency response device for Audrey. She has been weakened by the surgery and chemo treatments and is frequently light-headed and a bit unstable on her feet. Audrey’s appetite has been affected by the chemo so she was pleased when she heard that she could select her meals from a menu of 30+ options and each delivery would contain some of her selected options, Joe is relieved that while he is at work, she can press the button on her emergency response device to be put in touch with Connect America. They can send emergency response personnel or reach out to Joe, her designated support person without her having to dial a cell phone to summon help. With each home care visit, the care worker can see to it that Audrey safely takes a shower, heats her home-delivered frozen meal and tidies up a bit after. Although this is a difficult time for both of them, they feel supported by Allegan Senior Millage services. Friends they know in other Michigan counties have had to pay out of pocket for similar services and all of these services are completely covered under the Allegan Senior Millage services.
