A big part of the motivation behind our name change to McAdams Free Clinic was to reflect our service expansion. What started as a mission to care for our neighbors in Mecklenburg and Union counties is expanding because the need for accessible healthcare continues to grow.

Now, we’re proud to extend our reach across five counties: Cleveland, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, and Union.

And we're excited to embrace a name that both honors our legacy and embraces a broader future of care for every neighbor who needs it.

We are committed to being a medical home for uninsured individuals and families, providing not only primary and specialty care, but also behavioral health services and patient education that support the whole person.

"Honoring where we’ve been. Looking ahead to where we’re going.

More than 20 years ago, our clinic was first imagined by parish nurse Gail Dokes, RN, and Dr. Lou Ann McAdams. Their vision—to care for low-income, uninsured individuals in the Matthews community—quickly grew, bringing together partners who believed in the mission and helped it thrive.

From those early days to now, so many have stood beside us, including Matthews United Methodist Church, Novant Health Matthews Medical Center, LabCorp, Mecklenburg Radiology Associates, and countless others.

As we step forward as McAdams Free Clinic, we do so with deep gratitude for the people, partnerships, and purpose that built us.

We are still feeling the excitement from our Next Chapter event earlier this week as we unveiled our new name and logo!

Thank you to everyone who joined us and for the incredible support and enthusiasm you’ve shown throughout this transition. We are honored by your encouragement and excited for all that lies ahead.

This rebrand is about much more than a new name and visual identity—it is a tribute to the extraordinary legacy of our founder, Dr. Lou Ann McAdams, who faithfully served as our volunteer medical director for 20 years. Her compassion, dedication, and unwavering commitment to caring for the uninsured have been the foundation of our organization from the very beginning.

As we continue to grow and expand our reach, we could not imagine a more meaningful way to honor her impact than by carrying her name forward. We look forward to building on that legacy and serving our community for years to come.

"Yesterday, we shared the exciting news that Matthews Free Medical Clinic is now McAdams Free Clinic. Today, we're sharing the why behind the change.

First, our new name honors the legacy of Dr. Lou Ann McAdams: co-founder, longtime volunteer, and a guiding force behind our mission. Her compassion and leadership helped shape who we are today.

Furthermore, as we expand to serve five different counties, we want our name to more broadly reflect the many communities we empower.

While our name is changing, our commitment remains the same: to provide free, high-quality healthcare and to treat every patient with dignity and respect.

Because healthcare is about more than medicine.
