I’ve been looking for ways to lighten my heart lately. The idea of FORGIVENESS has presented itself in a variety of ways recently and feels like a good place to start. I find it humbling and also disarming. “There’s strength in vulnerability” as they say.

Ever heard of Ho’oponopono? It’s an ancient Hawaiian practice for forgiveness and healing. It keeps showing up in my life, so I’m taking it as a sign to pay attention. I’ve heard of the practice before, but it hasn’t resonated with me until lately.

In my space of self-reflection (another tenet of yogic philosophy, Svadhyaya, “self-study”) I have decided to give it a try, but I’ve added my own twist. Instead of apologizing twice, I forgive. I forgive myself and I forgive others.

Ho-oponopono is translated as “to make right”. It involves cleaning negative memories and emotions by taking responsibility for one’s life and actions.

Here’s how I do it….

I hold someone in my heart, their presence, their essence, their energy, something about them that I can connect with authentically. Then I recite the mantra with my whole heart a few times and send the message out into the quantum field and imagine them receiving it.

I’m sorry.
I forgive you.
Thank you.
I love you.

I may never truly “know” if they felt it. But my heart feels lighter and I can let go of any negative energy that I’ve been inadvertently holding onto. And somehow, I can breathe a little deeper, and my hope and intention is that they can too.

“Tapas” anyone??… I wish I meant tasty Spanish appetizers, but I’m actually talking about “self-discipline”. That’s one of the few translations for this tenet of yogic philosophy, “Tapas”. The direct translation is HEAT. It refers to the fire we often go through as we are challenged with “catharsis, transformation and spiritual effort”. And man, have I been goin’ through it.

A bit of a long public journal entry without any personal details, sorry to disappoint;-)

I’m on a personal and professional mission centered around expanding our consciousness. It starts with practicing awareness of ourSelves and our environment, then taking action accordingly.

The thing is…the more I teach and study consciousness, the more the universe gifts me “opportunities” to practice it. Oh my goodness, I’ve been practicing A LOT!!

Pretty much every facet of my life has offered up its own little obstacle course lately. My body’s been tested. My mind has been exceedingly active-so much going on in the world has me questioning and reacting in ways I haven’t entertained in a long time and probably ever. My heart has been cracked WIDE open. And after all of that, my spirit is working hard to get its bearings.

It’s been a cry for Tapas, to stay present in the fire of self-reflection and pause. Stillness and quiet have been essential, so that I can hear my inner guidance. Breath work, so I can calm my nervous system. Journaling, so I can let my heart speak. Meditation, so I can make space for my intuition and my inner knowing. Movement, so I can release emotions and yes, my frustrations. Connection, so I can stay rooted in love. These are just a few.

I’ve been doing my best. It’s really all we can do. Doing my best to live life intentionally and authentically. And always returning to Ahimsa (compassion and grace) for myself AND for others.

How do you practice self-discipline and compassion at the same time? Feel free to share

Namaste (the light in me honors the light in you)
