When big emotions hit, does your kid talk it out or need to move it out?

Some children find relief in words. They want to sit close, tell you the whole story, and hear that it makes sense. Others need to run, stomp, build, or squeeze something before a single word can come out.

Both are real. Both are valid. Neither one means your child is "too much" or "not enough."

At Anchored in Hope, our therapist Jenessa meets kids exactly where they are. One parent shared that their 10-year-old, who struggles with big feelings, felt safe, seen, and understood from the very first session. That is the goal every time a child walks through our door.

If your child is carrying more than their small shoulders should have to, we would love to help. πŸ’™

Tell us in the comments: is yours a talker or a mover?

"I don't know if therapy is actually working."

If that thought has crossed your mind, you are not alone. Progress in therapy rarely announces itself. It usually shows up quietly, in the moments you almost miss.

Therapeutic progress is a real thing with a simple meaning: measurable shifts in how you think, feel, or respond to life between sessions. Not a finish line. Not a certificate. Small, felt changes that add up.

It can look like pausing before you react instead of snapping. Sleeping through the night for the first time in months. Naming a feeling you used to bury. Setting one small limit with someone you love, and surviving the discomfort.

One parent recently shared that her son made "great strides" in a short time working with our therapist Erin Agan. That is what progress sounds like from the outside. From the inside, it often feels like relief you did not expect and moments that used to be hard becoming a little easier.

If you are in the middle of the work and wondering whether it is doing anything, look for the small shifts. They count. They are the healing. 🌱

"I didn't even call because I figured my insurance wouldn't cover it."

We hear this a lot. Sometimes from people who have been struggling quietly for months. Sometimes years.

Here's what we wish more people in northwest Ohio knew: most insurance plans, including Medicaid, are required to cover mental health services. The hard part usually isn't the coverage itself. It's not knowing the coverage is already there, or not being able to find a provider who accepts it.

That's part of why Anchored in Hope exists the way it does. We accept most major insurance plans and Medicaid. And we have a billing team whose whole job is helping you figure out what your plan covers, so you don't have to sort through it alone.

If the cost question has been the reason you keep putting off making the call, let us help you check. You may be closer to care than you think. πŸ’™

A seven-year-old who cannot fall asleep on Sunday nights is not in crisis. But that Sunday dread, left alone for years, often turns into something much harder to untangle at seventeen.

Children tell us what is happening long before they have the words for it. In play therapy, the first few minutes of free play are often the loudest. The character who keeps getting left out of the group. The tower that always gets knocked down. The doll who is never allowed to speak.

These are not random. They are patterns. And they are usually things a parent would never think to mention at intake, because on the outside, everything looks fine.

You do not need a diagnosis to notice a pattern. You do not need a crisis to ask for support. Play therapy, child-focused sessions, and parent guidance are built for exactly this moment. The one before things get harder. 🌱

If something in your child feels a little off and you cannot quite name it, that is enough reason to reach out. We are here in Maumee, serving Toledo and northwest Ohio, and we would be glad to talk with you.

"I just need to stop overthinking."

That's what most people say when they come in for anxiety. It makes sense. When your mind won't quiet down, calming the thoughts feels like the obvious fix.

But overthinking is often a symptom, not the source. Before we look at thought patterns, we check something else first: is your nervous system still stuck in a defensive state?

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, describes what happens when the body gets caught in a threat-detection loop. Your autonomic nervous system hasn't registered that you're safe yet. And when the body is still bracing, no amount of reframing thoughts will hold.

So the real question we sit with is this. Is this a thinking problem, or is the body still bracing? That answer shapes everything. It might mean CBT is a good starting point. It might mean somatic work, or something like the Safe and Sound Protocol to help the nervous system settle first. 🌿

You are not broken for not being able to think your way out of this. Sometimes the body needs to feel safe before the mind can rest.

A client once sat through her entire first group therapy session without saying a single word. Afterward, she told us it was the most understood she had felt in years.

That surprises people. Most walk in expecting group therapy to feel like a forced circle of confessions, where you have to earn your seat by handing over your hardest story.

The real thing looks different. In a well-run group, the room actually gets quieter as the hour goes on, not louder. That quiet is the sound of people listening, not waiting for their turn to talk.

Group therapy at its best is a room where the unspoken things do not need explaining. Where connection, shared experience, and gentle guidance do more work than any one confession could.

You are allowed to just be there. To listen. To nod. To notice you are not the only one carrying what you carry. Speaking comes when it is ready, and never a moment before. πŸ’™

If you have been curious about group therapy but held back because you thought it meant baring your soul to strangers, we would love to talk with you about what our groups actually feel like.

Same goal. Two very different rooms.

One client told us something we think about often. She spent four months with one therapist, growing steadily, feeling safe. Then she switched to another for a fresh perspective. Both experiences changed her life.

That is the quiet truth about therapy. There is no single "right" style. There is only the right fit for where you are right now.

Some people need Ben energy. Steady, grounding, the kind of presence that helps you slow down and settle in week after week. Others need Casey energy. A fresh voice, a new angle, someone who nudges you to see yourself differently.

Neither is better. Both can be transformative. Sometimes you need one for a season, then the other.

So we're curious. If you were walking into a first session tomorrow, which would feel more like home right now: the steady anchor, or the fresh perspective? πŸ’™

Some people leave a session feeling lighter after 50 minutes of conversation. Others need to pick up a paintbrush before they can find the words at all.

Both are real therapy. Both are led by trained clinicians. Neither is "more serious" than the other.

Talk therapy works through language. You name what you're feeling, look at the patterns underneath, and build insight through dialogue. It fits people who process well by talking things through and want to examine thoughts and behaviors directly.

Art therapy works through the creative process. When emotions feel too layered, too tangled, or too early to put into sentences, making something gives them a shape you can actually see. It fits people who feel stuck in words, who carry trauma that's hard to articulate, or who just want a different door into their inner world. No artistic experience needed.

At Anchored in Hope, we offer both, because people are not one-size-fits-all. Sometimes the right first step is a conversation. Sometimes it's a blank page. πŸ’™

If you're not sure which one feels right for you, that's okay. We'll figure it out together.
