๐ŸŽˆ What is the yolk sac?
The yolk sac is a tiny, round, balloon-like structure that forms inside the pregnancy sac in the first weeks of pregnancy. It is one of the very first things that can be seen on an early ultrasoundโ€”usually around 5 to 6 weeksโ€”often before the baby (embryo) itself is visible.

โค๏ธ Why is it important?
Think of the yolk sac as the babyโ€™s first โ€œlife-support pack.โ€ Before the placenta is ready to take over, the yolk sac does several essential jobs:

โ€ข Feeds the early embryo. It acts like a temporary stomach and liver, delivering nutrients to the growing embryo.
โ€ข Makes the first blood cells. It produces the earliest blood and blood vessels for the embryo.
โ€ข Helps build the baby. It contributes to the early formation of the intestines and the cells that will later become eggs or s***m.

๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€โš•๏ธ Why does it matter on an ultrasound?
Seeing a normal yolk sac is a reassuring early sign that a pregnancy is developing in the right place and on track. It is a landmark doctors look for before they can see the embryo or heartbeat.
