Many families don't learn about the ID/DD Medicaid Waiver programs until their child is much older, often during a time of transition when they are already trying to navigate new challenges and support needs. Early planning can make a significant difference.

During this morning's Grounds for Support session, Mississippi Medicaid Waiver and Community Support 1915(i) Overview, Brittany Nelson, Community Services Division Director at South Mississippi Regional Center, shared valuable information about the evaluation process, available services, and the importance of starting early.

The ID/DD Medicaid Waiver currently has an estimated 𝟖–𝟏𝟎 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐰𝐚𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭. Because of this, families of children with an intellectual disability diagnosis are encouraged to begin the evaluation process around age 7 or 8. Starting early allows families to better understand their options and take steps toward accessing supports when they may be needed in the future.

A huge thank you to Brittany for taking time out of her Saturday to educate our families and answer questions about these important programs. We appreciate South Mississippi Regional Center for helping families better understand the resources available and how early preparation can help.
