Flu season is quickly approaching, and YOU can help stop the spread. Remember these important tips this flu season.

1. Get your flu vaccine. Vaccination is the best way to prevent serious illness for you and your family.

2. Wash your hands. Use soap and water or an alcohol-based hand cleanser.

3. Cover your coughs and sneezes. This helps limit the spread of germs.

4. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose. Touching your face can spread germs from contaminated surfaces into your body.

5. Stay home if you're sick. If you're sick, your germs travel with you. Protect others by staying home and resting.

Here are 3 important tips regarding toothbrush usage from our newest Dentist in Malta, Dr. Kilie Pletcher, DDS!

1. Electric toothbrushes are a great option, especially for people with limited mobility, orthodontic appliances, or trouble sticking to brushing routines. However, the best toothbrush is the one you will use properly every day.

2. Proper brushing technique is even more important than the type of toothbrush you are using. An ideal oral hygiene routine focuses on brushing for two minutes twice daily using a fluoridated toothpaste and to incorporate daily flossing. It is important to use a soft bristled toothbrush and brush gently to maintain healthy gums.

3. The ADA recommends changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months in order to have more effective plaque control. You know it's time to change your toothbrush if you notice the bristles have become frayed, worn, bent, or discolored.

Did you know that around 20% of the water in the average person's diet comes from the food they eat? Drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated this summer. Here's a list of high-hydration foods.

Strawberries
Watermelon
Bell Peppers
Tomatoes
Celery
Zucchini
Cucumbers
Lettuce
Asparagus
Cauliflower

But remember, these aren't replacements for water, and it's still important to meet your daily water requirement, especially in the summer heat! These foods can give you a hydration boost.

Please join us in welcoming Christina Johnson, LSW to our School-Based Behavioral Health Team! Christina will be working in the MVHC Zane Grey School Health Center.

Christina obtained her Master of Social Work degree from The Ohio State University. She says she became a Social Worker because she knew that she wanted to work with children and families to navigate life’s challenges and connect them to resources and interventions that would provide support and healing in their relationships. She enjoys school-based Social Work, helping to remove non-academic barriers to learning and improve their social and emotional wellbeing. Some fun facts about Christina: She once drove all the way to Texas in one day for a bucket list experience at The Alamo and Magnolia. She has also researched her family’s genealogy.
