That backpack your kid is about to sling over one shoulder? It matters more than you think. 🎒
During childhood and adolescence, the spine is still developing its natural curves and the postural muscles are still learning how to support the body correctly — which means the way weight is carried now can shape patterns that stick around for years.
An overloaded or unevenly worn backpack forces the spine to compensate, which can create uneven muscle tension and put extra demand on the neuro-spinal system as it develops.
Here are the tips we give every family this time of year:
1️⃣ Both straps, every time — one shoulder creates uneven loading through the spine and pelvis
2️⃣ Position the backpack at the belly button, not down at the hips, so weight sits closer to the body’s center of gravity
3️⃣ Keep total weight at or under 10-15% of your child’s body weight
4️⃣ Use the chest and waist straps if the backpack has them — they distribute weight instead of letting it all pull on the shoulders
5️⃣ Pack heaviest items closest to the back, not toward the outside of the bag
6️⃣ Get their nervous system checked at the start of the year, so we can catch compensation patterns early
Small habits, big impact on how their body handles the school year ahead.
