Terpenes Table: Single Plant multiple Categories and 100s of Compounds Part 3
One remarkable medicinal herb contains an exceptionally diverse collection of natural compounds.
Its major compound categories include cannabinoids, cannabinoid acids, terpenes, terpenoids, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, fatty acids and lipids, plant sterols, pigments, alkaloids, amino acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, volatile organic compounds, volatile sulfur compounds, waxes, glycosides, and other phytochemicals.
Terpenes are volatile aromatic molecules that help create the herb’s distinctive scents and flavors while also protecting the plant from environmental stress, insects, and microorganisms. Prominent examples include myrcene, limonene, linalool, α-pinene, β-pinene, β-caryophyllene, humulene, terpinolene, ocimene, bisabolol, nerolidol, and geraniol. Laboratory and animal research has reported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, analgesic, calming, and neuroactive properties for certain terpenes.
However, effects differ greatly by compound, dose, formulation, and route of administration, and strong human clinical evidence remains limited. β-Caryophyllene is especially notable because it can activate the CB2 receptor.
Researchers are also investigating whether terpenes interact with cannabinoids and other compounds through an entourage effect.
Some studies support possible complementary activity, while others have not found clear cannabinoid-receptor interactions, so this concept should not yet be presented as clinically proven.
