When I say we take hands-on care seriously, I REALLY mean it!

Today, I decided that instead of another classroom lecture on proper bathing techniques, I’d put myself and our new DON of AL/EC in the shower and let our care team show us what they’ve got! Because sometimes the best way to teach exceptional care is to experience it firsthand.

My mission? To give our team an opportunity to practice their Positive Approach to Care (PAC) techniques, including positive physical approach, Hand-under-Hand assistance, compassionate communication, and ensuring care is completed thoroughly without leaving someone feeling rushed, frightened, or uncomfortable.

And while I can absolutely laugh at the sight of leadership in shower caps, there is nothing funny about how seriously I take the dignity of the people entrusted to our care.

Bathing is one of the most personal and vulnerable parts of someone’s day, especially for those living with dementia. A shower isn’t just about getting someone clean. It’s about helping someone feel safe, respected, comfortable, and genuinely cared for from beginning to end.

I don’t believe in simply telling my team what great care should look like. I believe in getting involved, teaching by example, and sometimes putting myself in the position of the very people we’re here to serve.

If I’m going to hold my team to a high standard of care, I’d better be willing to get a little wet helping them achieve it!

Shirley was sharing with me stories of her AMAZING life including her husband, Major General John H. Storrie (that’s him on the right) and that’s his plane, the SR-71 Blackbird.

I was sharing with Shirley that when I was early in my career, I had the honor of caring for a wonderful woman whose husband had been a World War I fighter Ace flying bi-planes, and later I cared for Major General Charles Bond, the last living Flying Tiger.

To now know and care for Shirley is a special treat. She is amazing in her own right and we honor Major General Storrie by ensuring that the love of his life is cared for.

He was the first Navy pilot to fly the SR 71, the “fastest air breathing crewed jet ever flown operationally”. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in Vietnam, in a jet that when fired upon would just punch it and out climb the missiles (with a top speed of 2,193 miles).

Shirley remembers watching the SR takeoff and the afterburners kick in and what an amazing site it was. She shared that he flew many a secret mission and would communicate with her by letter, positioning the postage stamp upside down to let her know he was safe.

Hearing the stories of the amazing people we care for is one of the most special parts of having the honor of caring for seniors.

Who knew cardio could be this much fun? Our residents rock the room during our seated cardio drumming sessions. Between keeping the rhythm, moving to the music, and sharing a lot of laughs, this is a community favorite.
