Heart-Healthy Habits May Support Independent Living.

The American Heart Association's Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is a set of health-related behaviors and clinical measures—including not smoking, achieving adequate sleep duration, maintaining a healthy weight, eating a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and having healthy levels of blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure—that are associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. According to a recent study, older adults with high adherence to LE8 had lower odds of disability in basic activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and getting out of bed.

A recent study that included 1,122 participants found that individuals with the highest legume intake had 79% lower odds of ulcerative colitis, suggesting legumes may play a role in supporting gut health and lowering inflammatory disease risk.

Midlife Cataracts May Signal Stroke Risk.

An analysis of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database revealed that adults diagnosed with cataracts between the ages of 40 and 64 had a 33% higher risk of ischemic stroke than similar individuals without cataracts. The authors suggest that cataracts and stroke may share underlying biological mechanisms related to vascular health and aging. These findings indicate that eye health may provide insight into broader cardiovascular risk.
