Fish oil isn’t as simple as “just take it”

The benefit comes down to one thing
EPA

That’s the part of omega-3s that actually supports heart health
But only when it’s:

Properly sourced
High quality
Dosed in the right range

The sweet spot
1,000 to 2,000 mg of EPA daily

Too little won’t help
Too much can cause issues like irregular heart rhythm

It’s not about grabbing any bottle off the shelf
It’s about knowing what to look for on the label

These two get confused all the time. They are not the same.

A heart attack is a blockage problem. Blood flow to the heart is reduced or stopped.

Cardiac arrest is an electrical problem. The heart stops beating effectively.

Here’s how to tell the difference:

HEART ATTACK
Person is awake and talking
Chest pain, pressure, or discomfort
Shortness of breath, nausea, sweating
They still have a pulse

CARDIAC ARREST
Person collapses suddenly
Not responsive
Not breathing normally
No pulse

That difference matters because the response is completely different.

Heart attack:
Call 911
Keep them calm
Get help fast

Cardiac arrest:
Call 911
Start CPR immediately
Use a defibrillator if available

Most people freeze in that moment because they are not sure what they are seeing. You do not need to be perfect. You just need to act.

Knowing the difference helps you do that.

GLP-1 medications aren’t a blanket solution but in the right patient, they can make a real impact both in your heart health as well weight loss.

We’re seeing the most benefit in patients:
➡️ Who have a BMI over 30
➡️ Signs of a stiff heart on imaging
➡️ Elevated filling pressures

In those cases, patients who are taking a GLP-1:
➡️ Breathe better
➡️ Lose weight
➡️ Improve how the heart fills and relaxes

It’s not about trends, it’s about the right treatment for the right patient.

If you’re not sure where you stand, start with base line prevention.

Come see us at The Heart Smart Group in our Frisco or McKinney office for our prevetion clinic pathway. We’ll help you understand your heart health and build a plan that actually fits you.

Strong hearts aren’t built in the clinic. They’re built in the choices we make every day.

For me, that means fresh air, movement, and a reminder of what we’re all working toward: a life full of energy, longevity, and moments like this.

Take care of your heart, and it will take care of you. And have some fun along the way.

A severely calcified 90% LAD blockage that once may have required bypass surgery, now treated with advanced imaging from @‌HeartFlow and Shockwave IVL technology from @‌Shockwave Medical.

Modern cardiology is changing outcomes in real time.

You don’t have chest pain.
You haven’t had a heart attack.
So… you’re in the clear, right?

Not always.

A coronary calcium score is a CT scan that can detect silent plaque buildup before symptoms start.
I recommend it to asymptomatic patients between 40-75, or even younger if you have risk factors of heart disease.

It’s quick.
It’s non-invasive.
And in many cases, it’s covered.

You don’t have to wait for a problem to take control of your heart health.

Ask your doctor about a coronary calcium score.

Most people think cardiac arrest is not survivable.
That is not true.

Survival comes down to speed and access.

Here is what actually matters:
-Someone recognizes it quickly
-CPR is started
-A defibrillator is used within minutes

That one step can change everything.

Defibrillators are built for everyday people.
They guide you step by step in real time.

If you are in a gym, airport, school, or office.
Look for one before you ever need it.

And if you have someone at higher risk at home.
It is worth having a plan in place.

Seconds matter more than anything in this situation.

Most people only look at LDL. But that doesn’t always tell the full story.

There’s another marker called ApoB. It shows how many cholesterol particles are actually capable of forming plaque.

Here’s where it matters:
* You can have “normal” LDL and still be at higher risk
* ApoB can reveal hidden risk that standard labs miss
* Treatment decisions often change when ApoB is elevated

I recently saw a patient doing everything right. No symptoms. Low calcium score. LDL looked fine.

But her ApoB was high.

That changed the plan. We focused on lowering ApoB, not just LDL.

If you’re serious about prevention, this is a conversation worth having.

Ask your doctor if ApoB testing makes sense for you.

Heart disease can have NO symptoms → FACT
Many people don’t feel anything until a major event like heart attack or stroke.

Keto diet is good for the heart → MYTH (oversimplified)
While keto may help some people lose weight or improve short-term markers, it can raise LDL cholesterol in others and isn’t universally heart-healthy.

Sleep deprivation can increase heart disease → FACT
Poor sleep is linked to hypertension, arrhythmias, and higher cardiovascular risk.

Statins are bad for the heart → MYTH
Statins actually protect the heart by lowering cholesterol and reducing heart attack/stroke risk.

Broken heart syndrome is an actual disease → FACT
Known as Takotsubo cardiomyopathy, often triggered by extreme stress.

Stress tests are 100% accurate → MYTH
Stress tests can miss early or hidden disease.

Drinking wine is good for your heart → MYTH (misleading)
Moderate wine may have some benefit, but the risks of alcohol outweigh the “heart healthy” myth.

Impotence could be an early sign of heart disease → FACT
Erectile dysfunction can be an early indicator of vascular disease.
