Sometimes grief shows up in your body before you have words for what you’re feeling. You may feel tense, restless, distracted, emotionally heavy, or suddenly overwhelmed by something that seemed small.
When that happens, you don’t have to figure out why right away. Before searching for an explanation, give your body a chance to settle.
Try this:
Step 1: Plant both feet on the floor and gently press down. Slowly tense and release your muscles, moving from your feet upward.
Step 2: Then look around and notice where you are. Take in your surroundings and remind yourself:
“I’m here. This is now. I can make room for what I’m feeling.”
You’re not trying to make the grief disappear. You’re helping your body feel more grounded so you can respond with care.
Step 3: Once you feel more settled, get curious:
•What was happening right before I started feeling this way?
•Did something remind me of them?
•Did a conversation or memory come up?
•Is a holiday, birthday, anniversary, or meaningful date approaching?
The connection may not be obvious right away, and that’s okay. You don’t have to force an answer. Simply notice what may be underneath the feeling.
We can be quick to ask, “What’s wrong with me?” when our body may actually be responding to something meaningful.
Regulate first. Reflect second. 🤎 Save this for a day when grief seems to show up out of nowhere.
