Positive reinforcement is a foundational principle of behavior analysis: when a behavior is immediately followed by the addition of a stimulus, and that behavior occurs more often in the future, the stimulus is functioning as a positive reinforcer. The key is the effect, not the intent—praise, a token, a preferred activity, or a tangible item only counts as positive reinforcement if it actually strengthens the behavior it follows. Its power lies in timing and contingency: the reinforcer must be delivered consistently and close to the target behavior, and it works best when tailored to what is genuinely motivating for that individual. Used well, positive reinforcement builds new skills, sustains appropriate behavior, and does so without the side effects of punishment, making it one of the most effective and humane tools in a behavior analyst’s repertoire.

The Premack Principle
Named after psychologist David Premack, who formalized it in 1965, the Premack Principle is one of the most practical rules in behavior analysis. At its core it states that a high-probability behavior can reinforce a low-probability behavior. In plain terms: if you want someone to do something they don’t especially want to do, make access to something they do want to do contingent on it.
This is why it’s nicknamed “Grandma’s Rule.” Grandma says, “Eat your vegetables first, then you can have cake.” Eating vegetables is the low-probability behavior; eating cake is the high-probability behavior. The opportunity to eat cake becomes the reinforcer that strengthens vegetable-eating.

First–Then
“First–then” is the applied, everyday form of the Premack Principle, and it’s a staple of ABA practice, especially with children and individuals who benefit from predictable, visual structure. The contingency is exactly the Premack logic, stated in a simple frame:
“First [low-probability task], then [high-probability activity].”

Group Contingency 101 — the ABA trick for getting a whole group to work together
Ever wonder how therapists get an entire classroom/clinic moving toward one goal? It’s called a group contingency — and it’s a game-changer. 🎯
Here’s the breakdown:
A group contingency is a behavior-change arrangement where the same contingency is presented to an entire group, and reinforcement is delivered based on the behavior of one person, a subset, or the group as a whole.
The key isn’t that everyone behaves the same way — it’s that the contingency and the reinforcer are arranged at the group level. 🧠
Example: “If the whole class earns their points by Friday, everyone gets 10 minutes of free time!”
Suddenly peers start helping peers — and free time becomes a team effort. 🙌
Save this for your next session (and your next exam)! đź’ľ

Behind the scenes

Progress in ABA isn’t always a straight line — and that’s okay. Some of the most meaningful gains happen slowly, one small step at a time. The journey may be slow, but every breakthrough along the way is worth it. In ABA, we celebrate the small wins — the first word, the first calm transition, the first independent step — because they add up to something life-changing. Patience today builds independence tomorrow. 🌱
