We’ve been working with Scheuermann’s patients for over a decade and are continually asked about complications with spinal fusion surgery in adolescence vs adulthood.
This groundbreaking study shows that surgical complications for scoliosis patients are significantly less before 30 years old but the number JUMPS after 50.
If you need surgery, the earlier the better

Congratulations to the 2026 Thomas E. Whitecloud Award winner for Best Clinical Research Paper, “From Adolescence to Late Adulthood: Quality of Life and Surgical Outcomes in Idiopathic Scoliosis Across the Lifespan,” which was presented by Ferran Pellise, MD/PhD at the 2026 IMAST meeting!

In a cross-sectional study of a prospectively collected database of 761 patients with idiopathic scoliosis across age groups ranging from 10-14 to >70, they found worsening pain, function, self-image, and mental health scores with increasing age. Additionally, the lumbar curve severity increased in age >30. However, older patients did exhibit the greatest improvements in pain and mental health postoperatively, and self-image was the most affected domain with the greatest improvement across all age groups.
