HYPERNASAL SPEECH 👃🏽 Hypernasal speech happens when too much sound resonates in the nasal cavity during speech. This makes a child sound like they’re “talking through their nose.” This occurs when the soft
palate doesn’t fully seal off the air from the mouth to the nose during voiced sounds like vowels.

Kids with hypernasality may show:
👃🏽Nasal-sounding vowels
❌Weak or omitted consonants
💨Nasal air emission
🗣️Compensatory articulation patterns

Hands Up, Stand Up! 👐🏻

How to play:
🏃🏾‍♀️‍➡️Set up an obstacle course indoors or outdoors
🪑Include opportunities to crawl through a tunnel or under a chair
🗣️After crawling through the tunnel, say, “Hands up, stand up!”
🧍🏽Child should move from all 4’s to one knee up, then standing.

That’s it! This one simple movement builds strength, balance, and coordination.

Look for other ways to add “hands up, stand up” throughout the day.
🧩Place puzzle pieces on the floor and the puzzle frame on a chair 10’ away. Walk on knees with a puzzle piece, then “hands up, stand up” to build.
🥶Play freeze tag! When you are tagged, sit down on the ground. When someone un-freezes you, do “hands up, stand up” to rejoin the game!

Half kneeling is a position used to stand from the floor without using your hands.

Imagine sitting on the floor, holding a beach ball. If you stand up without dropping the beach ball, you used half kneeling. ⚽

Or, think of someone getting down on one knee to propose! 💍That’s half kneeling!

Having kids complete activities using half kneeling builds hip strength, core stability, and unilateral balance required for functional movement! 🦵🏻🌟

Did you know most babies pull up to standing at 8-10 months old? Most often, babies learn to pull to stand shortly after learning to crawl. 🌟

Babies may first figure out this skill in their crib. The crib gives the optimal setup for motor learning: they are highly motivated to stand up and let everyone know they are awake and ready to play!

Also, the crib has plenty of places to hold on and zero distractions (because there should be no toys, pillows, or blankets in their crib).

As soon as they learn to stand, be sure to reassess and adjust their sleeping setup to keep them safe.

Babies love to stand to get a new view of their world. Babies that love standing but are unable to crawl or pull to standing themselves can be very demanding! They often cry or yell when sitting on the floor when they see something out of reach. If your baby is having difficulty with crawling or pulling to stand, let us help!

We are so excited to share we have welcomed a new speech therapist to our Justabout Pediatric Therapy team! 🌟 Meet Miss Bristol🌟

Bristol is a Speech-Language Pathologist currently completing her Clinical Fellowship Year. She earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Speech-Language Pathology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. 🎓

She is passionate about helping clients build communication skills and confidence in a supportive, engaging environment. She believes that learning is most meaningful when it’s enjoyable, and strives to create
a therapy space where clients feel comfortable being themselves, taking risks, celebrating successes, and having fun along the way. Whether through games, creativity, or a little silliness, she loves finding ways to make therapy both effective and enjoyable. 🧸🧩😀

When she’s not at work, you can find her spending time with family and friends, enjoying the outdoors, cheering on her favorite sports teams, listening to music, or curled up with a good book. 🌳🎶📘

❓Mystery Bag Summer Edition 😎

👜Fill a bag with summer‑themed items (real or toys): Sunglasses, sunscreen, flip‑flops, shovel, shell, mini beach ball, popsicle toy, etc.

Have your child reach in and pull out an item without looking. 🙈

Then, you can model or prompt a variety of communication skills!

🐚Labeling: “It’s a shell!”

🗣️Describing: “Tell me three things about it.”

❓Functions: “What do we use it for?”

⬇️Core words: “I want ___.” “Put it in.” “Take it out.”

📈Expanding utterances: “Big shell.” → “It’s a big shell.”
