This week, our very own Cassandra Haddad, CRNP at Turnpaugh Health & Wellness sits down with Dr. Sara of Magnolia Pediatric Dentistry in Lancaster for an insightful discussion on women's health, root-cause medicine, and symptoms that are often overlooked or dismissed.

From fatigue and hormone imbalances to digestive concerns and beyond, they discussed why symptoms matter and how they may be your body's way of asking you to look deeper. Part 1 of this 2 part episode.

Thanks, Dr. Sara, and great info, Cassandra!

Your gut microbiome is home to trillions of bacteria that influence far more than digestion. They play important roles in immune function, nutrient absorption, inflammation, metabolism, and even brain health.

But keeping those beneficial microbes healthy requires both prebiotics and probiotics—and they do different jobs.

🌱 Prebiotics are specialized fibers that feed the beneficial bacteria already living in your gut. Think of them as fertilizer for your microbiome.

🦠 Probiotics are the live beneficial bacteria themselves that can help support a healthy balance of microbes in the digestive tract.

For the best gut support, aim to include both throughout your week.

Prebiotic-rich foods:
• Garlic
• Onions
• Leeks
• Asparagus
• Apples (with the skin)
• Slightly underripe bananas

Probiotic-rich foods:
• Yogurt with live cultures
• Kefir
• Sauerkraut
• Kimchi
• Naturally fermented pickles
• Kombucha

💡 Pro Tip: Pair them together! Eating a probiotic food alongside a prebiotic food helps nourish the beneficial bacteria you're introducing.

Examples:
🥣 Yogurt + sliced apple
🥬 Kimchi + asparagus
🥒 Fermented pickles + onions
🥛 Kefir + slightly green banana

Remember, consistency matters more than perfection. Regularly eating a variety of fiber-rich plants and fermented foods can help support a more diverse, resilient gut microbiome over time.

Constantly running on empty? There may be more to the story.

Many people assume chronic fatigue and low energy are just part of getting older or living a busy life. Dr. Mark Mascari sees it differently.

Instead of focusing on one symptom, functional medicine looks at how the body’s systems work together. When one or more systems are out of balance—whether it’s hormones, nutrition, inflammation, gut health, sleep, stress, or other factors—your body may start sending signals like persistent fatigue.

The goal isn’t simply to mask symptoms. It’s to identify the underlying contributors and create a personalized plan to help restore balance and support your body’s ability to function at its best.

If you’ve been searching for answers to chronic fatigue, low energy, or other ongoing health concerns, Dr. Mark Mascari is now seeing patients in our Enola office.

We're surrounded by technology 24/7, but one place you can reduce effects of unnecessary exposure is while you sleep. 🌙

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are invisible energy fields produced by devices like cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, Bluetooth devices, and electrical wiring. While research is still evolving, some laboratory and observational studies have suggested EMFs may influence oxidative stress, cellular signaling, brain activity, or sleep architecture.

The good news? These are simple, no-cost habits that can reduce your exposure while you sleep:

✈️ Put your phone on airplane mode.
📶 Turn off your Wi-Fi overnight.
🛏️ Keep your phone out of the bedroom—or at least several feet from your bed.
🔌 Unplug electronics you aren't using.
🖥️ Choose wired internet or wired accessories when practical.
⏰ Use a battery-powered alarm clock instead of your phone.

Whether these changes improve your sleep by reducing EMF exposure, limiting nighttime notifications, or simply creating a healthier sleep environment, they're easy habits worth trying. Better sleep is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your long-term health.

Have you tried any of these? Tell us which one you're starting with tonight! 👇
