For six weeks, David Thigpen was without his “shadow,” the partner always by his side. His wife Debbie fell at their home, and what seemed minor was actually a life-threatening traumatic brain injury. David’s quick thinking saved her life. Through the continuum of care at Select Specialty Hospital - Gainesville and UF Health Rehabilitation Hospital, Debbie fought her way back, relearning to breathe, eat, talk and walk. Today, the Thigpens are side by side again and back to the life they love.

“I couldn’t say ‘I love you.’”

For millions of people living with aphasia, a disorder that impacts one’s ability to speak, read or write, early intervention with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) can help regain meaningful communication skills over time.

In observance of Aphasia Awareness Month, we celebrate the life-changing work our SLPs and clinical teams do to help people reconnect, one word at a time.

June is Cancer Rehabilitation Awareness Month.

At least 90% of people experience side effects from cancer treatment. But help is available. Cancer rehabilitation helps patients regain strength, confidence and independence from diagnosis through survivorship.

As a founding member of the International Cancer Rehabilitation Foundation and home to ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation, the nation’s first comprehensive cancer rehabilitation program, we’re proud to help lead this movement.

Join us in raising awareness and improving outcomes for those impacted by cancer.

Jeff Koehler stopped for gas on his way to a hunting trip. Moments later, he was lying on the ground. A stroke, and the complications that followed, nearly took his life.

When Jeff arrived at Select Specialty Hospital - Madison six weeks later, he was still critically ill. With the support of his physician-led, multidisciplinary care team and the constant encouragement of his wife Peg, he slowly began to recover, regaining his ability to breathe, talk, eat and stand. He then transitioned to Select Medical Rehabilitation - Madison, an inpatient rehabilitation unit within the hospital, where intensive therapy helped him rebuild strength and stamina.

Jeff walked out of the hospital to the cheers of the care team who guided him through nearly two months of recovery.

We wish Jeff and Peg the very best as he continues his journey forward.

View Fox43 coverage of this week’s ribbon-cutting ceremony for Select Medical Neuro Transitional Center (NTC). When patients require intensive post-acute care rehabilitation due to the severity of their cognitive, physical or behavioral impairments, the NTC bridges the gap between hospital discharge and their return home.

The Select Medical Neuro Transitional Center aims to provide patients suffering from brain and spinal cord injuries with care found nowhere else in the region.

Cool or gross? Have you ever wondered what it looks like when you swallow? Our speech-language pathologists are able to watch patients eat and drink through a thin, flexible camera passed through the nose to diagnose issues.

Shannon Trusty, a retiree who moved to Florida to savor life along Lake Okeechobee, couldn't have imagined a cherry stem would nearly end it. The 63-year-old quickly spiraled from unexplained pain to emergency surgeries, organ failure and weeks of sedation. “I don’t remember January or February,” he said. After 45 days, Shannon arrived at Select Specialty Hospital - Palm Beach unable to stand, speak or eat. There, recovery unfolded slowly – ice chips to a cheeseburger, five steps to hundreds.

Shannon reclaimed a life that now feels extraordinary in its simplest moments. Shannon shared his story at the ribbon cutting ceremony for Select Medical Rehabilitation - Palm Beach, which now offers a continuum of care within Select Specialty Hospital.

During Stroke Awareness Month, we’re proud to celebrate Carolyn Stewart, a church pianist, and her inspiring recovery.

After a stroke left her unable to walk, speak or care for herself, Carolyn came to Southern Kentucky Rehabilitation Hospital to regain her independence. With the support of her family and care team, the 81-year-old made meaningful gains each day.

A remarkable moment occurred just six days into her stay. As she passed a piano with her therapist, Carolyn paused and asked to play. Her hands found the keys and music flowed effortlessly as if it had never left her.

Today, Carolyn is walking, speaking and continuing her recovery at her son’s home, where a music room gives her space to play, heal and connect with her family and faith.
