Faith. Family. Hard work. Those were the constants in Tanner Lawson’s life long before a car accident upended it. At 27, he was a business owner, husband and new father whose days revolved around physical labor and providing for the people he loved. Tanner took pride in his independence and strength. “Every interaction shapes the patient experience, making CNAs and patient care techs essential to healing, outcomes and the human connection at the bedside every day.” — Melissa Beers, senior vice president, clinical operations, specialty hospitals.

Our nursing assistants and patient care technicians spend the most time with our patients. They are essential eyes and ears, informing care team colleagues of any subtle changes in a patient’s mood or ability to accomplish a particular activity. This, in turn, helps to support recovery progress and outcomes.

Denise Thompson was caught off guard — not just by the cancer diagnosis, but by what came next. She didn’t have a road map after her double mastectomy for breast cancer. Like so many patients, she was happy the surgery was a success, but that wasn’t the end of the story.

Denise experienced tightness in her chest and under her arms as well as a lot of pain. Not right away, but several weeks after the surgery, when she thought things were going well.

She wasn’t sure what would help. She asked her care team for physical therapy or scar massage. They recommended us.

Denise worked with ReVital Cancer Rehabilitation-Certified Physical Therapist Colleen Volpe. During nine visits, Colleen used myofascial release and manual therapy to reduce pain, ease restrictions and restore Denise’s range of motion.

“I highly recommend it for anybody,” Denise said. “My chest pain has stopped for the most part. My mobility’s a lot better. And just the education of knowing what’s going on has made a huge difference. I think that it’s something all patient’s should have.”

CNAs are at the heart of patient care and recovery.

Working alongside nursing and therapy teams, nursing assistants and patient care technicians play a vital role in supporting patients throughout their healing and recovery. They take vital signs, respond to call lights, observe and report on changes or progress and assist with patients’ personal care needs.

Above all, they encourage and guide patients with compassion, helping them stay motivated to achieve their recovery goals.

We love when former patients return to show us how far they’ve come and Darrell Manning’s visit to Select Specialty Hospital - Nashville was truly special. Darrell arrived at the hospital last year in respiratory distress, sedated and on a ventilator and feeding tube. He spent eight months recovering there. Once he woke up, his progress never slowed.

Today, Darrell is thriving, even working two jobs, including one in healthcare where he encourages others on their recovery journey. Keep moving forward, Darrell, and thank you for taking the time to visit. 💙
