🦷 Healthy Smiles Start with Healthy Bone

When people think about missing teeth, they often focus on the space in their smile—but did you know that your jawbone also changes after a tooth is lost?

The jawbone relies on stimulation from your tooth roots to stay healthy and strong. Once a tooth is missing, the bone in that area can gradually shrink over time. This can affect your bite, neighboring teeth, and even future treatment options.

The good news? Replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant can help stimulate the bone and preserve your jaw's natural structure.

If you've been putting off replacing a missing tooth with a dental implant, we're here to help you understand your options. Our team is happy to answer your questions and determine the best treatment plan for your individual needs.

Contact AOMS today for more information on how to get the implant process started!

🦴 Why Is Bone Grafting Sometimes Necessary?

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone in that area can begin to shrink over time because it no longer receives the stimulation that comes from chewing and biting. Bone loss can also occur due to gum disease, infection, injury, or long-term tooth loss.

In some cases, there may not be enough healthy bone to properly support a dental implant. Bone grafting helps rebuild and strengthen the jaw, creating a solid foundation for future treatment and helping restore both function and appearance.

Bone grafting can also help preserve the natural contours of the jaw after an extraction, improving long-term oral health and increasing the likelihood of successful implant placement.

Every patient is different, which is why a thorough evaluation is important. If bone grafting is recommended, it's because we're planning for the best possible long-term outcome for your smile. 😊

AOMS FAQ Series 💬🦷

Q: Can I have dinner the night before surgery, and should I brush my teeth that morning?

A: Yes! You can enjoy dinner the evening before your procedure. However, if you're scheduled for IV sedation or general anesthesia, it's very important that you do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before your appointment—including water, coffee, chewing gum, breath mints, or candy. If it goes in your mouth, it needs to wait until after surgery.

The good news? You should absolutely brush your teeth before coming in! A clean mouth helps support a safe surgical environment. Just be careful not to swallow any water or toothpaste while brushing.

Following these instructions helps ensure your anesthesia can be administered safely and your procedure goes as smoothly as possible.

🦷 Your dental implant is designed to be a long-term solution—but its success depends on how well you care for it.

Just like natural teeth, implants require daily brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups to keep the surrounding gums and bone healthy. Good oral hygiene helps prevent inflammation and infection that can compromise the longevity of your implant.

Dental implants have a high success rate, but they're not maintenance-free. A few minutes of care each day can help protect your investment and keep your smile healthy for years to come.

Have questions about caring for your implant? Our team is always happy to help!

Don’t Ignore Changes in Your Mouth ! 🦷

Did you know that your mouth can provide important clues about your overall health?

Oral pathology involves the diagnosis and treatment of abnormal tissue changes in the mouth, jaws, and surrounding structures. While many lumps, bumps, sores, or discolored areas are harmless, some may require further evaluation to rule out more serious conditions. A biopsy is often the best way to determine exactly what is causing an abnormality.

If you notice a sore that won't heal, a lump, red or white patches, or any unusual changes in your mouth, don't wait to have it evaluated. Early detection is key and can make a significant difference in treatment outcomes.

At AOMS, our surgeons are specially trained to evaluate and treat conditions affecting the mouth, face, and jaws, helping patients get answers and peace of mind.
