Fourth of July, vacations, backyard parties… this time of year brings a variety of activities, which sometimes throw off daily routines and social settings. And while many enjoy the outdoor activities that come with the warmer days, the “party” atmosphere can feel challenging for those in recovery for a substance use or alcohol disorder.

We want you to navigate this sun-soaked season with some helpful tips:

1. Be vocal about your sobriety. It brings accountability.
2. Have a support person on speed dial that you can call if you need help.
3. Go to a meeting before or after the event/party.
4. Don’t put yourself in a vulnerable position or go to someplace where you are the only sober person.
5. Have a plan or an exit strategy.

Recovery is about more than stopping substance use—it's also about helping the body heal.

Substance use can affect nutrition, energy levels, physical health and overall wellbeing. That's why nutrition plays an important role in the recovery process. A balanced diet can help restore the body, support brain function, improve mood, increase energy and provide a stronger foundation for long-term recovery.

At Discovery Addiction Services, improved nutrition during recovery is part of a holistic approach that supports healing the mind and body.

As we wind down Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to share a few quick tips about how to prioritize your mental health:

1. Take a walk. Even if it’s just for 10 minutes, the fresh air and movement can do wonders for your mind.

2. Create a healthy sleep pattern. One way to do this is by cutting off screen time an hour before bed (you have our full permission!).

3. Journal about small things that make you happy. Maybe it’s reading a book with a cup of tea. Perhaps it’s having a fun chat on the phone with a good friend. When you write down these little things, you can reflect on how they bring you joy.

There are so many other ways you can prioritize your mental state, but we see these as a good start.

And if you haven’t been able to focus on your well-being because of substance use, mental health or co-occurring disorder, we are here to help. Prioritize yourself today by visiting the LINK IN OUR BIO.

Exciting news: our very own Samantha Bradley, CADC, has been promoted to Care Coordination Manager!

Since joining our team in 2016, Samantha has consistently demonstrated dedication, innovation and a strong commitment to patient care. Her experience in operational and clinical roles (behavioral health technician, recovery mentor, case manager, family wellness counselor and primary therapist) have provided her endless experience in setting our patients up for success within their recovery.

In her new role, Samantha will be the acting liaison between our treatment teams and our clinical outreach teams. She will be able to utilize her counseling skills to help ensure Pinelands patients are set up for success post-discharge. Her contributions have already made a meaningful impact on both our team and our patients, and this promotion reflects her hard work and leadership.

Congratulations, Sam – we're excited to see all that you’ll accomplish in the next chapter!

Recovery starts with a decision. And that decision isn’t made by itself.

This Alcohol Awareness Month, Anthony, a former patient from our sister center in Pennsylvania, shares what he wishes everyone struggling could hear:

You are not alone. People care. And it’s okay to ask for help.

We’re so happy that Anthony found this at one of our centers. Remember, no matter where you are right now, don’t be discouraged. Healing is possible—and it can start today. Please contact us today if you want to overcome alcohol abuse once and for all.
