Vernadine Wages

Vernadine Wages, a longtime resident of Meeker, Oklahoma, passed away on September 6, 2026, in Meeker at the age of 83.

Vernadine was born on September 1, 1943, on her grandparents’ farm in rural Tuttle, Oklahoma, to Vernon G. and Betty L. (McDaniel) Statton. In 1957, Vernadine and her family moved to Meeker, where she attended Meeker Schools and graduated from Meeker High School with the Class of 1961.

Following graduation, Vernadine moved to Oklahoma City, where she lived at the YWCA and began her working life as an elevator operator. On May 1, 1964, she married John Edward Wages. Their marriage would span more than 47 years until John’s passing on October 18, 2011.

Vernadine and John returned to Meeker during the 1980s and made their home there for the remainder of their lives. Together, they shared a love for travel and adventure, seeing much of the country over the years. In their younger days, they traveled by motorcycle, and Vernadine could often be easily spotted by the sparkly ball cap she wore while riding. Later, they traded the motorcycle for an RV and continued exploring the country, enjoying the freedom of RV life and the opportunity to bring their beloved dogs along for the journey.

Every trip seemed to leave Vernadine with a memory and often a new shirt to go with it. She collected shirts from the many places she and John visited, and each one came with its own story. Naturally social and outgoing, Vernadine loved visiting with people and had a gift for making new friends wherever their travels took them.

Vernadine enjoyed a long and varied working career. After beginning as an elevator operator in Oklahoma City, she later worked for Southwestern Bell, which eventually became AT&T. During her many years with the company, she worked her way from switchboard operator to supervisor over the engineering department before retiring.

After returning to Meeker, Vernadine and John also served their community as reserve deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. Vernadine later worked for the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office, serving for many years as both a dispatcher and reserve deputy.

Her faith and church family were an important part of Vernadine’s life. She was an active member of Mammoth Baptist Church and, following John’s passing, became especially involved with the church’s Widows’ Group. The ladies often sat together during worship services and shared many trips and outings throughout the years. Their friendship and fellowship became a meaningful part of her life.

In her free time, Vernadine enjoyed quilting and had a deep love for dogs. Her dogs were much more than pets to her; they were treasured companions and an important part of her family and travels.

For the final two and a half years of her life, Vernadine made her home at the Meeker Nursing Center.

Vernadine was preceded in death by her loving husband, John Edward Wages; her parents, Vernon G. and Betty L. Statton; her brother, David Statton; and her sister, Clara Kersey.

Those left to cherish her memory include her brother, Fred Statton; her sisters, Veta Statton and Norma Henson; her three stepchildren, John Wages, Mike Wages and Shelia Roque; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family members and friends whose lives were touched by her friendship, stories, and outgoing spirit.

Darryl Lynn Fisher (Butch)

Darryl Lynn Fisher (Butch)

Darryl left this world Friday, September 4, 2026, in St. Louis, Oklahoma at deer camp. He was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma, on April 29, 1954, to John Quincy (Jake) and Treba Mae (Williams) Fisher. He attended school in Meeker and graduated from high school in 1972. After school, Darryl enlisted in the United States Army, serving from 1972 to 1976 at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma, until his medical discharge in February 1976.

Darryl met Belinda Gail Opela in 1980. They married on June 9, 1981, and recently celebrated 45 years together.

His career included work at Lincoln County District 3 in Meeker, Barton Valve, TDK/Allen Bradley, Darryl's Auto Clinic, Pratt's in Tecumseh, Farm Fresh in Chandler, Jerry Tilley Trucking, S&S Salvage, and most recently Shawnee Medical Center Clinic where he retired in 2010. Wherever he worked, he didn’t just make coworkers, he made friends. Many of those friendships lasted a lifetime and were something he truly valued.

Darryl was a skilled mechanic who rebuilt vehicle motors for many family members and friends. He loved fishing, hunting, cooking, and especially enjoyed preparing his hunting and fishing harvests for family gatherings. His favorite holiday was July 4th because he loved blowing things up and he was really good at it. He took much pride in being a good provider and he excelled at every job he held. Those who knew him remember a man who knew a little about everything.

Darryl is survived by his wife Belinda; daughters Heather and husband Sky Hitchcock , Brandi and husband Jason LaPlante; granddaughters AbbieGail and Maegan James; and grandsons Weston and Colyn LaPlante; brother Larry Fisher and sister-in-law Debbie Fisher; father-in-law, George Opela; sister-in-law Karen and husband Ernest Clark; brother-in-law Jody and wife Robin Opela; also many loving nieces, nephews, lots of extended family, and his beloved second family the French’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents Treba & Jake Fisher, siblings Johnny Fisher, Nancy Edmonds and Sandy Pack and his mother-in-law Jean Opela.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, September 11, 2026, at Parks Brother's Funeral Service Chapel in Prague, Oklahoma.

Curtis Clayton Scroggins III

Curtis Clayton Scroggins (III), died on September 3, 2026, at the home he shared with his wife and children in Prague, Oklahoma. He was born on January 14, 1986, in Hobart, OK, and grew up in Shawnee, OK. He moved his family to Prague in July of 2013. Curtis, Tera’s husband and father of her kids, will never be defined by the addiction that he went through. Most importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his wife and kids and creating new memories. Curtis's family that he will be leaving behind are his wife, Tera Scroggins (Miner) of Prague; his two kids, Cameron Scroggins and Kaitlynn Scroggins of Prague; his mother Deborah Anne Scroggins (Pinner) of Shawnee; his twin Rebecca Oden of Fort Gibson, Ok; his brother Joseph Scroggins of Shawnee; his mother-in-law Angela Chandler and husband Brian of Bristow, Ok; father-in-law, Terry Miner of Holdenville, Ok; brother-in-law Michael Miner and wife Jess of Connecticut; aunt Amy and husband Monty of Shawnee; his nieces and a nephew; as well as numerous friends.

The family that he will rekindle with in the afterlife will be his father, Curtis Clayton Scroggins (JR); grandmother, Jo Ella Elliott; and many brothers he lost along the way.

Curtis married the love of his life on August 25, 2006. They had been together since October 16, 2000. She was his best friend and always pushed him to follow his dreams and not let his past define him. They had their first child Kaitlynn in November 2006 and their second child Cameron in December 2009. He always wanted to spend time with his family and make up for lost time that the system took away. He enjoyed music most of all, as well as tattoos, sketching, fishing, going to the lake, riding the jet ski and tubing, rebuilding engines, working on cars, home repairs, cuddling, and playing with his dogs. He would go out of his way to help anyone even if they couldn’t return the kindness and had the biggest heart. He obtained his GED in 2004 and completed part of an associate's degree. He was currently trying to get into CDL school so he and his wife could travel after Cameron graduated.

His grandmother Jo Ella Pinner passed away in 2012. She was Curtis's guardian for most of his life. He loved her more than anything, and he was always trying to get better for her and his family. He went through a lot of hard times in life but was fighting hard to reshape his life.

Curtis was not defined by his struggle alone, but by the fact that he was fighting a relentless, exhausting battle against more than one illness very few people understood. He knew the good he wanted to do, even when the weight of the fight made it feel impossible to carry out, but his story isn't defined by the end of that war, it's defined by the fact he kept trying. Even when he fell, he got back up, picked up his spear and shield, and continued fighting. His kids are what kept him trying. May he finally find the peace and forgiveness he sought.

Romans 7:15, 18-19- "I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate to do. For I have the desire to do what is good but am struggling to carry it out." -"God himself will be with us and be our God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. He who was seated on the throne said, Behold, I am making all things new."

Lisa Janeine Lakins

Our mother, Lisa Lakins, passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Eufaula, Oklahoma, at the age of 60. She was born on March 10, 1966, and was raised in Prague, Oklahoma, by her parents, James and Evelyn Lakins.

Lisa spent her life caring for people. As a nurse practitioner, she loved her work and her patients as if they were family. Caring for others was not simply what she did for a living. It was a reflection of who she truly was.

She also knew how to enjoy life. She loved to travel, loved concerts, and loved being near the ocean. The Caribbean held a special place in her heart, and few things made her happier than warm weather, beautiful water, and the chance to escape and experience something new.

Lisa is survived by her mother, Evelyn Lakins; her brothers, Tim Lakins and his wife, Susie, and Eric Lakins; her three sons, Kyler, Kaleb and his wife, Alyssa, and Kameron; her grandson, James; her “sister-in-love”, Angie; and her beloved dogs, Molly and Frankie. She also leaves behind nieces, cousins, great-nieces, a great-great-nephew, and many other family members, friends, patients, and people who were lucky enough to know her.

In accordance with her wishes, our family held a private viewing on August 30, 2026.

We will hold a celebration of her life at a later date on a beach, probably somewhere in the Caribbean. It will be planned by her three sons and grandson. We know she would love nothing more than having all of her boys together in one place, surrounded by the ocean she loved so much.

For now, we want to remember our mother for the life she lived, the people she cared for, the places she loved, and all of the stories that came with her.

If you have a story, memory, message, or photograph of Lisa, please share it with us. Serious, funny, embarrassing, sentimental, or somewhere in between, we want them all. We plan to sit together, read them, laugh, probably cry, and enjoy remembering our mother as she really was.

We will miss her more than we can put into words, but we are grateful for the memories she left us and for every person who helps us keep those memories alive.

Ralph Eugene Britton

Ralph Eugene Britton, a resident of Prague, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Prague, at the age of 71. Ralph was born on June 1, 1955, in Bryan, Texas. He was the son of Wesley Britton and Virginia (Hightower) Plunkett and was also raised by his stepfather, Alvin Plunkett.

Ralph attended Tishomingo High School in Tishomingo, Oklahoma, where he graduated before answering the call to serve his country. Following high school, Ralph joined the United States Marine Corps. He proudly served during the Vietnam era from 1973 until 1977. His time in the Marines remained an important part of who he was throughout his life.

Over the years, Ralph worked in a variety of fields and was never afraid of hard work. He worked for Allied Materials in Stroud, SYGMA, Teen Challenge in San Antonio, Texas, and later as a truck driver in the construction industry. Ralph was also a talented craftsman. He had a remarkable ability to work with his hands and could create quality pieces that looked as though they had been professionally made.

Life was not always easy for Ralph, particularly in the years following his military service. Those experiences, however, gave him an understanding of hardship that he was often able to use to help others who were facing struggles of their own. He understood that life could be complicated, and he could relate to people in a way that came from having walked through difficult seasons himself.

A few years ago, Ralph moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Prague to be closer to his family. Of all the things in his life, his children and grandchildren held a special place in his heart. He loved them deeply and took great pride in each of them.

Ralph also had a soft spot for animals, especially cats, and they seemed to have a soft spot for him as well. He was a colorful character with plenty of opinions, and he was rarely afraid to share them. Those who knew Ralph knew where he stood, and his personality had a way of keeping everyone around him on their toes. He could be outspoken, spirited and uniquely himself.

Two phrases Ralph was particularly fond of seemed to capture something of the way he approached life: “Keep it simple” and “Ride boldly, ride.” Through the good times and the difficult ones, Ralph lived life in his own way, leaving behind stories, memories and a personality that will not soon be forgotten.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, Wesley Britton and Virginia Plunkett, and his stepfather, Alvin Plunkett.

Those left to cherish Ralph’s memory include his sons, Ralph Britton and his wife, Amber, and Raymond Britton; his grandchildren, Shawn Britton, Colby Britton, Kaylee Britton, Connor Britton, Andrea Britton, Austin Bowen and Peyton Bowen; his sister, Darline Wilson and her husband, Bob; his brother, Jim Hightower; his nephews, Chris Wilson and Johnny Wilson; and a host of other family members and friends.

Sonja Kay Harris

Sonja Kay Harris, a lifelong resident of Meeker, Oklahoma, passed away on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Meeker, at the age of 87.

Sonja was born on June 10, 1939, in Meeker, Oklahoma, to Edwin and Reva (Flowers) Crownover. She grew up in Meeker, attended Meeker Schools and was a proud member of the Meeker High School Class of 1957. Sonja remained deeply connected to the community she called home throughout her life.

Sonja married Donald Edward “Ed” Harris, and together they shared 63 years of marriage. Their life together was filled with family, companionship and countless memories. They were blessed with two sons, Gene and Clay, and remained devoted to one another until Ed’s passing on April 17, 2021. Even the simple moments they shared became special ones, including many games of Yahtzee and Wahoo played together through the years.

Sonja worked for AT&T for many years. Outside of work, she had a lifelong love for horses. As a young woman, she enjoyed barrel racing, an interest that reflected both her adventurous spirit and her appreciation for horses. That love remained with her throughout her life. Her horses, Sassy and Honey, held a special place in her heart.

Family was at the center of Sonja’s life, and she especially treasured the time she spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She took great pride in watching her family grow and loved the opportunities she had to be part of their lives.

Sonja found happiness in both life’s adventures and its simple pleasures. She loved her dogs, including her beloved Okie, and enjoyed trips to the casino. Some of her favorite adventures were the birthday trips she took with her sisters, when they would choose a new destination and head off together to celebrate. Those trips provided plenty of fun, laughter and treasured memories between the sisters.

Sonja also had an appreciation for the beauty around her, particularly the sky. Whether it was the colors, clouds or simply an especially beautiful day, she enjoyed taking the time to notice and appreciate the view above her.

Sonja was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin and Reva Crownover; her beloved husband, Ed Harris; and two brothers, Harold Crownover and Lloyd Crownover.
