CLINICAL DRIVING ASSESSMENT

The clinical driving assessment consists of standardized tests which provide a comprehensive analysis of an individual’s cognitive, perceptual, emotional and physical capabilities. Our systematic testing process reliably tests the patient’s abilities in a wide range of tasks. From these tests we make a recommendation to the

physician concerning the patient’s readiness for driving. Components of Driving Assessment
Vision/Perception
• Objective measurement of visual acuity, field of vision, depth perception and traffic color recognition.
• Identification of underlying conditions which may be corrected with therapeutic intervention. Memory
• Assessment of an individual’s ability to remember general driving rules and regulations.
• Short term memory, long term memory.
• Time, person, place.
• Executive functioning abilities.
• Focus, multi-tasking, problem solving. Reaction Time
• Determination of a patient’s ability to quickly and accurately assess and respond to potentially dangerous situations. Emotional Stability
• Assessment of the ability to respond to stressful driving situations with emotional control. Indication for Referral
• To objectively quantify functional deficits as they relate to driving. Results of the clinical driving assessment are written in a concise summary report outlining the individual’s driving capabilities and deficits. The results can then be utilized to provide the physician, patient and family with concrete information regarding patient’s skills and/or establish a baseline from which progress can be measured. The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will also be notified of driving related functional deficits.
